My Network TV considers a programming change

Here's the story from Broadcasting and Cable magazine's website:

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6400418.html?display=Breaking+News

So, MNT initially thought about other types of programming, then ditched the idea and said they'd go with just the Telenovella format. I admire their willingness to try something new and stick with it. It's a rare trait in broadcast network television these days. However, MNT is getting lower ratings than anticipated. Worse, the new shows that debuted last week are getting lower ratings than the first batch of programs.

The story does not give a timetable or concrete answer to whether or not the network will change formats, but it's obvious they're thinking about it.

I thought they would stick this out for a full year, but that does not appear to be the case.

My guess is that they will most likely take the cheap route and go with stuff from the Fox film and TV library.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. It's gotta be better than these cheaply produced telenovas or other inexpensive programming.

The article talks about game shows, talk shows, reality shows.. that kind of thing. However, the Fox film and TV library would certainly be a popular choice among the MNT affiliates. The key for Fox is to keep the programming costs low so they can keep the advertising split attractive to the affiliates. The favorable terms that MNT affiliates get from Fox is likely one reason why you haven't heard a whole lot of griping from affiliates about the ratings. (at least publicly)

Here's the thing: Wasn't "My TV" supposed to be geared toward women? The programming they have to replace the prime time soaps with will probably be female-friendly. And you can only delve so deep into the Fox library, i.e. You can't air a first-run "24" against a "24" rerun on Fox Jr.

Yes, it's always been targeted for women. However, the shows were orginially supposed to air as a daytime block on Fox stations. However, it was only the UPN/WB merger that they came up with the idea to program a new network. They should have remained with their orginial plan.

Well it looks like it's do or die time for MyNetwork TV. To tell the truth, I am surprised they didn't get a bump in ratings with the debut of new shows the other week. Perhaps it could be time for a facelift for the network itself, although either way it's going to go in a handbasket sooner or later.

My Network TV will survive as long as Fox needs programming to fill on their non-Fox O&O stations.
There are too many stations in the same boat after the UPN/WB merger for this to just disappear quickly.
I suspect that you might see Fox find a way to repurpose some original reality programming from Fox Reality on the network. Maybe they'll resurrect some of those "world's wildest videos" shows they used to run on Fox. They might work a deal with some of the popular FX shows to either re-run them or just move them to My Network. (which would make more sense than re-running anything from Fox)

I have no doubts that Fox will think out of the box and reorganize the network, what I am doubting is its future. This isn't 1986 where when Fox came out there was only three competitors, we're in a time when so many networks are blurring that it looks like their broadcasting the same thing. Sure, cable networks such as TNT, FX and USA have gone above and beyond, but can Fox give MNTV a successful identity(current one doesn't seem to be working sadly). Only time will tell.

SADLY? The first medium to nickname its broadcasting identities in any way, shape or form is radio. 'Nuff said.

Well I said "sadly" because I'm pretty sure its sad to all three people who watch it. Did I mention those three people work in the control room?

And maybe Roger Ailes ;D

Why not similar programming to what's on Fox, but without showing the same shows, or show some of those shows on non-competing nights. Or hey, how about some more animation, fox seems to do well with that (except during sports), programs could go to MY when there's a pre-empted slot.

Okay, I know that I have slandered the network from day one, but I'm going to go a little easy on them this time. Maybe they should *ahem* stick with the telenovelas for the entire year, then move on to other programming. Then again, maybe they should have put these shows on FX instead in an effort to broaden that network's horizons.

MNTV should just give up and fold. Just because something is popular somewhere else doesn't mean it is going to work in North America. Plus, there are just too many channels nowadays. As I've suggested before, the number of broadcast channels needs to be cut. The United States has room for four broadcast networks, PBS, and an independent station or two in the larger markets (and Spanish in markets where it is warranted). The public airwaves cannot be wasted on such low-quality programming.

Hollywood 411

Here's a suggestion: Currently during My Network TV programming, there's a segment called 'Hollywood 411' about celebrity news. Why not spin that off into a TV show? :)

Um, let's see...
My TV considering dropping Telenovas....

GEE, YA THINK?
I predicted this one would be cooked sooner than a Thanksgiving Turkey, and I was right!
My quesetion now (pun intended) is this: Is it too late to save this lemon?

Ideas for MNT...

- Change branding. Rename the network "MY" or "My TV". Right now the name sounds silly. However "My TV" might have trademark issues.
- Move telenovelas to 2 nights a week, double run them on those two days. Programming from other nights might be able to drive viewers to those nights.
- Do what NBC is doing, invest in cheap game shows. Add two or three hour long game shows to the schedule.
- Have a movie night, either Friday or Saturday or both.
- Consider importing new shows from Canada. Most Americans can't tell the difference.

FOX is currently testing a little two hour scam......errr....game show called "My Games Fever" in the afternoon on 10 of the west coast "My TV" stations. It's based on a concept popular in the U.K. It's real simple: You text the word "FEVER" during a live game, and they choose randomly from those who text to play a game. The down side is each text message will cost you 99 cents plus whatever you cell provider charges. You can enter up to 10 text messages per show. So the bottom line is -- you tack on up to $9.90 on your cell phone bill per day, and you may or may not get a chance to win a few hundred bucks. Of course, you can enter for free online every game if you want to sit by your computer logged onto the show's website for two hours.

Anyway, I think this show will probably make the "MY TV" national prime-time lineup much sooner than later.

Reminds me of that stupid show that was airing on TBS earlier this fall Midnight Money Love, I think it was called.

There is something similiar to that on WPIX & WGN (Superstation) weeknights at 2am ET, 1am CT called Play 2 Win... Except that it is $1.50 per call/text.
