My Network TV headed in right direction...

So MY NETWORK TV is thinking about showing NFL and arena football games? That would be interesting since CBS, NBC and FOX already owns all of the NFL and arena football games on the air.

The San Antonio Spurs (NBA), and San Antonio Silver Stars (WNBA) already show their games on the MY station in San Antonio KMYS-35. What I would like to see is them carrying San Antonio Missions baseball games, that would be a real treat since they won't be carrying the Atlanta Braves except on ESPN, WGN, FOX, or FOX Southwest when they play Chicago, Houston, or the Texas Rangers. Maybe the MY Network nationally could bring some MLB games on Sundays and carry some MLB games with big marquee matchups like the New York Mets and New York Yankees, etc.

MY Network TV is a network that is owned by Fox Broadcasting, so I suppose that there might be a way to get some of these sporting events on the air. However, I have a feeling that the NFL specified that FOX's games (on a network level) should be on FOX - so this would take some arm-twisting. I'm sure that the NFL would not be happy to have lots of games pulled from big FOX affiliates and plunked on weaker MNTV stations.

That's not to say that a FOX-owned local MNTV affiliate (like WPWR in Chicago or WWOR New York) couldn't pick up a FOX game here or there. Then again, I am not sure what you're accomplishing there. What would the FOX station show in its place? Seems like robbing Peter to pay Paul to me.

I'm less sure about the contractual details of Arena Football games, but that would seem to be a great fit for MNTV.

No, I don't think you understand the article. The LOCAL My Network affiliates are getting some NFL and Arena Football games.
The NFL requires that any cable broadcast of an NFL game have a local over the air broadcast in the markets of the teams participating.
(so, for example, tonight's ESPN game with Cincinnati and Baltimore will be broadcast on one TV station in Cincy and one in Baltimore)
What My Network TV is getting for the whole network is the Saturday night NFL All Access show produced by the NFL Network. It's a good promotion for the NFL Network and a good way to draw in some male viewers to My Network TV. The network is not now, and likely has no plans to, bid on NFL games.

The article seems to be about local stations creative solutions and not the drivel the network is spewing forth.

??? EDIT: deleted text because for some reason or other, I posted it under the wrong thread. ???

No, it's about both the network and station level. I think this was the key comment from the story that I saw regarding the entire network:

"While MNT won't be squeezing into the Big Four -- or even battling The CW -- anytime soon, many in the advertising community are encouraged by the programming moves going into the second year."

The key points to take from the story:

1. Ratings are small, but getting better. The new programming seems to be working much better than the old programming. Advertisers like the direction it's going. That's about all you can ask for at this point.
2. Fox is sticking with it. As I've said before, Fox will do whatever it can to make this thing work. They changed directions when the telenovelas didn't work. Now they're going with proven concepts on a budget that should get the network closer to a break-even point.
3. The local stations are sticking with it. They're even finding an opportunity to do local programming that they didn't have before. This should be the most encouraging thing of the whole story.

I should add, I don't watch anyting on My Network TV. I just find the whole story kind of facinating from a business standpoint. It's a study in pop-quiz network creation. Fox had to make this thing up real fast after the UPN/WB merger left 9 of its stations without prime-time programming. They used programming they had available at the time and threw it together in just a few months. Knowing that Fox wouldn't do this thing without making a long-term commitment to make it work adds some extra curiousity to the story. Clearly this has not gone as well as Fox had hoped, but it's also obvious they've got the thing headed in a better direction now.

It would be smart for CBS Sports during March Madness to shows games on The CW also. This way you will get to switch back from game to game. On CBS you would get the local game or team closest to you while on your local CW station you will get the next local game or team closest to where you live. I said this before about when UPN was around. This wouldn't be a bad idea at all for CBS to do during March Madness.

If possible (perhaps at least on Fox O&O MY affiliates, if the home team is not playing at home that week), what about something similar during football season for NFL broadcasts (local team on the main Fox affiliate, next local/division rival/national game on the MY affiliate).

If Fox wants to throw another billion dollars at the NFL for a package of games for My Network TV, that could be arranged. Otherwise, it won't happen - period.
If you want a game like that, you need to pony up the cash to get Directv and the NFL Sunday Ticket. That's why Directv pays the NFL so much money. The NFL isn't just going to casually let games go on My Network stations (even if they're owned by Fox) for a small sum. It would have to be a separate package of games with a hefty rights fee paid.

"A reminder to stay tuned for your INN Network News after our coverage of this game..."

Please, this makes the XFL on UPN look like a good idea.

In fact, it makes the XFL look like a good idea!
