My Prayers Are With Those

I am watching KOCO and one of the elementary schools is devastated. Kids and teachers are missing. Direct hit to this elementary. I'm seeing the devastation and it is awful. Prayers go out to everyone in the OKC area.

Question - has KOKC been knocked off the air?

Despite early statements they are still digging in the school.

Of low importance, OKC 9 streaming occasionally shows the KOKC site but stream is low quality now so I can't get a good view of it. Devistation path was 1/10 mile south of the towers.

24 kids found dead at Plaza Towers ES in Moore, OK. KFOR has reported it. RIP! :'(

I was looking over the devastation in Moore, Oklahoma streaming on News9.com. My prayers are with those who do the First responder routine. Channel 9 was doing an excellent job of reporting and the guys who do the weather was doing an excellent job even though the storminess was gone. Gary England thought that the tornado that blew through could be a Cat 5, even though the NWS said it was a cat 4.

Even though I am living in Mississippi, being an OSU Grad and lived in Stillwater in the late seventies-early 80's if I were to move back to Oklahoma Channel 9 would be my first choice for weather.

CC and Cumulus have both been doing cluster-wide simulcasting for at least a while this evening.

What were they doing PRIOR to the tornadoes hitting Moore? I understand radio had zero local presence until after the fact.

I saw a clip from Moore showing the damage. As the camera panned you could easily see KOKC's 3 towers in the shot. The neighborhood surrounding them was devastated. Those are 3 old school towers (Blaw Knox?). Considering the bad luck that community has had over the years with tornadoes and severe weather, that site must have been incredibly well built to withstand it all.

KWPN 640 (former WWLS) did not do well. All four towers were knocked down. It's the ESPN station in OKC.

Also, many, many kids are still missing at Plaza Towers ES as of 11PM CDT, many have been found dead and the others may be presumed dead or drowned as well. People around the WORLD have watched this, as far as Israel, where many people have watched the catastrophic coverage. KUDOS TO PAUL FOLGER AND THE MANY REPORTERS ON KOCO!! YOU DID GREAT!!

Or 1520's just been lucky unlike 640 or WKY's original tower which fell during 1999's tornado.

I'm surprised those towers are still standing, this tornado came so close to them. http://static1.businessinsider.com/...a32000002-1023-626/nws moor tornado paths.jpg

I'm listening to 1520 here in Texas right now, rebroadcasting KWTV Channel 9's audio.

Using Google Earth & news footage the edge of the tornado swath was only 3/10 miles from 1520.
Plaza Towers Elementery is less than a half mile south of KOKC.
Briarwood Elementary about a mile and a half to the south-west.

KOKC continues with Ch 9 simulcast.

Wow. All four went down, huh? I heard Indian Hills Road mentioned a few times, thought of 640. Crazy day, just like '99 unfortunately.

UPDATE - the four towers were in the path and are still standing - but power is completely off and KWPN is not transmitting. I thought the towers went down...

KOKC's towers were 300 *FEET* away from the tornado during the devastation. THAT'S 100 YARDS - A FOOTBALL FIELD AWAY!

To those affected by the tragic loss of life during this storm, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

OK - so the 3 tower array of KOKC and the 4 tower array of KWPN are both standing. What about the KTOK - 1000 and the KRMP - 1140 towers ?? Does anyone know if they were affected ?? Are they on the air ??

Yes. 1520, 640, 1000, and 1140 are all OK tower-wise. All are on the air except for KWPN who has generator issues. The Big 1520 is chugging along sipping on diesel. Thank you FEMA for that big-assed 80's generator and the huge tank next to it. It's come in really handy to keep Moore informed. Most all stations in the market, including 1520, were simulcating TV audio. 1520 continues to primarly be repeating channel 9 (KWTV), with some cut-ins from their radio news guy. Yes... The towers are 1946 Blaw-Knox towers. They are huge, square, angle iron beasts from 1946, when people built stuff to last. It's softer steal, so that probably gives a little more, making them more likely to survive. Old man Griffin did things only one way: 100% right. Those towers are one of the last relics of that legacy at KOMA (KOKC). Ironically David Griffin's mult-million dollar chopper flew over that area reporting also live via 1520. Some things still are the same. Griffin's still do things 100% right.
