My prediction for Pensacola Radio

Tibbs2,

We still carry a full schedule of Tom Kent's programs on Beach 95.1. He's on 7-midnight Mon-Sun (Mon-Fri is his regular night show; Saturday is "The Ultimate Party" and Sunday is "My 70's Show). We also air "Lovin' Life, Livin' the 80's Sundays from 2-7pm, and his "Live Request Show: The Beach 95.1 All-Request Beach Diner" from noon-1 weekdays.

He's a prolific air talent who "gets it." And yes, he's on over 200 radio stations around the country, and he's on in Canada now as well. His success is a testament to the fact that he's darned good at what he does, he's passionate about GOOD radio where so many have no fire left in the belly, and there's a HUGE market for a show that's well-produced and has a local feel to it.

And Rob, I know you're mainly a strictly OTA radio person, but you can still listen to Tom Kent online at www.beach951.com if you're so inclined.

While not a fan of long form Syndicated programming. Tom Kent is Good...really good. If the local presentation is done properly (the right liners and local breaks) it sounds great.

Ty for the stream, I wish you guys were on in this area, I sometimes get that damn noise from KSJ's HD feed.

Panama Cty has all the good formats..

I'm gonna take a bet and say WHWY will be changing formats, HMN will hold their own as the summer brings the party goers. HMN might come back to an oldies format, WCOA-FM will have programming changes Dave Ramsey or Clark Howard in the mix, Kim Kommando, maybe even Rush moving to the FM

I do not see sports on FM due to "The Ticket" buying satellites and their exclusive?? rights to carry Gators and other FL sports. Not sure how well the pensacola AM station is doing. If WAAZ gets sold, Hale could buy it and put the ticket there and classic rock back to 100.3, as long as Braves and local sports are still honored.

Crapulus dropped Coast to Coast.. big mistake!

WHWY isn't doing very well, Country 105.5 is kicking ass last I saw, despite it's crappy signal.

I'm also noticing Coast 93.3 playing more 70s?? Humm??

Here's my revised prediction based on what ya'll told me and thanks for posting.

Highway 98.1 has a new owner as of this year and as far as they are concerned FWB only has two country stations. I have to believe Apex will stick with Country on 98.1 for a couple more years before any format change thoughts occur. Factor in Country 105.5's horrible signal to the west and the fact that 98.1's transmitter is smack dab in the middle of the Redneck Riviera and you'll see where I'm coming from. I haven't factored in any ratings, but I'd bet that Highway 98.1 is one of the better performers in Apex's FWB portfolio.

I had no inside information whatsoever but when the Ticket moved off of 98.1, I posted on this board that I believed Country, "Highway 98", would soon appear on the dial. It really was a no-brianer to put country on THAT signal. Best case I can imagine now would be that Apex sells 98.1 to Cumulus for cash to pay off or down some debt, but I don't even know if Apex has any debt.

Mobile (WKSJ)... Pensacola (WXBM)... Panama City (WPAP)... and, no doubt, FWB--Country is the top-performing format in every market. Expand that to nearly every market--especially the smaller markets--in the entire Southeast.

If you have the choice, Country is the format you want your lead station (best signal) to be. And Apex has the choice. They're not idiots. 98.1 will be in Country until we're all dead and gone.

Hold on now, what market in the southeast has a #1 music format that isn't Country? And don't start bringing in those Yankee's in Florida south of Ocala, that ain't Dixie.

Also, Cumulus seems to be buying. I don't know shit about Apex and a couple folks on this here board know all about the Crestview Radio Mafia, but I wouldn't be surprised if Cumulus wound up purchasing 98.1 or 104.7 to move Country 105.5 up to a proper signal one day.... one day.

LOL, that's what I mean. Country is king in the southeast. There are some real strong Urban/Hip-Hop markets (Jackson, Shreveport--too many to name, really) but the money station is usually the top Country gun.

Apex just got to FWB, and it's hard seeing them concede their best stick to their biggest competitor right off the bat. Money talks, but usually not that loud. I don't know much about Apex, but I have the feeling that they're a real radio company.

Yeah, I know that Urban does well in some markets, hell WBLX has more listeners that any other station in it's coverage area. But I believe that Country can be considered the #1 muisc format in every single Southeastern market... be it highest number of total listeners, highest number of desirable listeners or highest billing format in the market. I'm not sure if WXBM or Cat country has higher ratings here in Pensacola but without any inside information whatsoever I am sure that when combined those two Country stations have more listeners and more revenue than anyone else.

I've been wondering what Apex might do. I was kinda surprised about the format flip of 103.1 to active rock. Radio listeners in about 2/3 of 103.1's coverage area are already set on 97X, they'll be hard to compete with. Now I guess I could kinda see some sense in putting a unique but still profitable signal on 98.1 and moving country to one of the other Walton county signals... only because a unique format could pull a significant number of listeners from the Pensacola market and Panama City markets. Say if Pensacola station flipped to compete in Mobile and opened a huge hole in the Pensacola market or Pensacola lost access to Classic Rock from Mobile for some reason, in a pinch 98.1 would be able to fill a gap. Country's only going to pull in local listeners that live or work in FWB on 98.1, the vast signal reach is wasted (see 105.5's small signal and high ratings). I think Qantum would have pulled similar ratings if they had used 92.1 or 102.1 for Country. Hopefully someone at Apex takes all the A/C out of Country and makes 98.1 twang. Is twang a verb?

You forgot one station, Cat Country 98.7 is a full 100KW signal - WAAZ is just a part timer, needs to be a full time 24/7 station (what happened to their new studio??) and be stereo.

Country 105.5 is there for the gap, Crapulus doesn't need to put a country station where people can hear PAP, XBM, AAZ, etc.. it's just there for the map.

End users are getting sick of the switches. I'm very surprised with Mix gone. *** doesn't change Z96 to Mix 96 Today's hit music and yesterday's favorites. and rebrand 93.3 to Oldies - Beach 93.3 has a nice ring to it and it's a grabber. Focusing more on the older set.

(sorry guys who work at ***.. removing Coast to Coast am from your lineup is why I call it Crapulus bad, bad move.. Dead Eye Radio sucks)
