My Star!

For those of you not listening the morning, Jeff & Jer announced, on the first day of their new gig at My 94.1, that the station is re-branding itself as Star 94.1.

That had to be the best-kept radio secret this town's had for quite a while! The whole "histar925.com" registration was obviously a red herring, and a masterful one at that.

The old my941.com website still works, but the new site is at www.star941sandiego.com .

Looks like we all got scammed!
And it seems that the folks at Magic were in on it!

It's a good idea. They brought the announcer from Star with them (he also does Fox and CBS TV promos). And, they brought they updated the jingle package that that 94.1 was using.

The only thing I don't understand is the logo. It is too different from what Star was using before. They should have used the same logo, or one similar to Star98-7 in LA, IMHO.

By the way, this is the first time I've ever heard of a radio station beating another radio station, and then becomming them! (My vs. Star). Yeah, I know, KCBQ and KGB, but that doesn't really count, does it?

Re: Star Becomes My

If Tracy Johnson at Jack FM was ever thinking of going back to Star 100.7, it's now too late to go back.

On the first hour Jeff and Jer returned live at 6am, the station was still called My 94.1. Then at 7:10am, the duo made a major announcement that the station has changed into Star 94.1.

The entire Jeff and Jer Showgram has moved along to the new station.
Little Tommy Sablan, Rick Moorten, Randy Hoag, and Laura Cain.

This is their fifth radio home since they arrived way back in 1989.
They were on Y94.9, then B100, then Q106, then Star 100.7, which changed into Jack 100.7, and now, My 94.1, which changed 70 minutes later to Star 94.1.
In the last six months, Jeff and Jer logically worked for four radio handles!

Four frequencies. Seven handles. Sixteen years.

The really loaded up the morning Showgram's page with lots of photos. Speaking of which, I looked at the pages for the other My Star jocks and I must say that Duncan and Mel has gotta be the homeliest radio show since the Prarie Home Companion.

Some really do have "a face for radio".

Changes? It's more like the same old thing! This market used to be adventurous & creative. Now it's just putting me to sleep. Star? Again? big whoop!

Uh... say what?

"Adventurous and creative"? Are we talking about the same San Diego?

For as long as I've lived and worked here, San Diego has been the most conservative radio market imaginable. The 80s and 90s, while thay had their bright spots (KPRI, Q106, 91X, KKOS) held no major surprises. And in the 70s we had The Q and B-100, plus XHIS and XHERS, which was pretty inventive marketing if not inventive programming. There's been a lot of GOOD RADIO here, for sure.

But adventurous? Creative? Prove it to me. In my mind, those adjectives describe this market about as well as they describe IBM.

Oh, and by the way, changing My to Star was a marketing masterstroke. Minimum effort, maximum payoff. My hat's off to whomever the genius was that thought of it. Probably Bollinger. - D.

Remember that meeting that Bob had with Jeff and Jer, just a few days after 100.7 became Jack? I'll bet we ALL know what that conversation was about now!

Now, if I were in charge of Magic, I'd change their name to My92-5 (or Maybe Q92), but Mike says he's happy with Magic as they are.
Ok...

But I agree with you Doc, strokes of genious!

A poster on this board named Gess let us know as early as 7/28 that this change might occur. His post (currently on page 5 of this board) mentioned that his wife received a research call asking her opinions of "My" switching names to "Star".

Will there be a change of calls?
______________
"...and the countdown continues until the neanderthals that govern college football do something about their pathetic postseason."--Tim Brando, Sporting News Radio

Ok, the problem is...

Well, I don't know about "Best kept Secret."
We all suspected that somebody was going to take over the Star image, we just were not sure who it would be. It was more like "smoke and mirrors," as opposed to kept secret.

The trouble with Gess is, although he had a phone call with a survey question regarding the name change, there ws no way to confirm who was placing the call. A lot has happened since then. Bob Bolinger was at 103.7, and Jeff and Jer were still at 100.7. We did not know what we know now. We did not even know what would happen to 92.5, 91.1 and 90.3. We just had this phone call.

So, "best kept secret?" I don't know about that. But they did keep us guessing. That's the problem with this business, it's a private club, and those of use who don't know, don't know.

But then, that's what I like about it too!

Re: Call it what you want...

"STAR" hasn't been "STAR" since Smiley left. Sure, Jeff & Jer
provided a big boost in ratings with their following, but
what that station was originally all about - and what the
rest of the staff after 10am tried to keep alive started was
Smiley...I know, I was there at that time and I've listened to it
become bigger, but not better.
So, 94.1 can take the name, but I've listened the last 3 days and
it sounds like anything BUT "Star"...sorry guys, you will NOT recapture it,
just MY opinion!
