My take on next flip

Someone wrote below, that Labor Day things will happen in the Rock segment on the local dial. I think it has to be JJZ, or to a lesser extent, SNI. The reason being, CC has no Rock presence in the Philly market, where-as, they do in all the large markets they service. Smooth Jazz is another failing format. Wired and Q spent too much $$$$ for some overrated players, so they will hang in there. R1 will continue to cater to "their" audiance with "their" sound, no matter if they get a 0.0, ratings wise. Ben will not compete with MMR and MGK so they are null and void. Another outside chance is OGL, remember, if Ben did not happen, OGL would of been Jack, so CBS really does not give a damn, OGL is not advertiser friendly to boot. My choices for Active are JJZ, SNI or OGL, if a change is really coming in September. Any thoughts + or -.

I have been at my boss for months, pursuing a change of policy at corp hdqtrs, concerning changing and modifying some formats. When these big heads are in a cloud its hard to convience them what is best. They hear it in the conventions, on the streets, you name it. I think it is starting to sink in and some changes are in the horizon. What puzzels me is, why 94.1 gave up being a full time Rocker for this, they should know it will never work. They were scared without Howard they would sink with just being a Rock outlet. How long will they stick it out, they will never achieve the 5+ they enjoyed for years on end, as a music station, continuing with this yarn. You are right with one assumption, CBS has nothing to loose by either sliding the Rock to 98.1 or visa versa.

You don't know how close and hot you are with that assumption, just relax and wait.

The reason I did go with JJZ is because with CC, SNI is a cheap to operate Cash Cow, Q, Power and DAS are status quo, with new people and a big budget. On the other hand, Smooth Jazz is not happening anymore, JJZ is an expense. About the format, I would say Active, because no-one is doing it full time. MMR is half-assed about it, but you see the ratings are still tremendous which tells you something about the format. God, I heard horrible Peter Gabriel yesterday, coming out of the liner "EVERYTHING THAT ROCKS". I don't think so, YSP is part time about it and they just added Dave Matthews, WHAT on an Active Rocker. With Active you can program Metal, Alternative, Classic and Hard Rock, both current and classic and get away with it. If they do decide on Alternative, they better beat the new owners of 97.5, whomever they may be to the punch.

I think that the next format flip will be ESPN Radio finally be heard in Philadelphia on a Philly station soon. ESPN radio maybe talked to Clear channel about wanting a Philly station to air all their programs and play by play sports from ESPN radio.

When Spike used to at YSP. I talked to him and he said that YSP was an alternative station. Even thought they are mostly active.

Before you drag WOGL into this how about considering some facts. #1, WOGL is ranked 6th in the ratings out of 30 stations rated. #2, out of the 5 radio stations in the Philadelphia market owned by CBS, only 1 is ahead of WOGL in the ratings which happens to be KYW. #3, CBS radio currently owns 2 FM stations in the Philadelphia market, and the one that has the lowest rating is WYSP which is currently ranked 17th. Please consider these facts before thinking of WOGL Sir. As for WOGL not being friendly when it comes to advertising, I have two words for you. Prove It.

I hope you're talking about the real numbers, not 12+, otherwise your post has little meaning.

Now the 25-54 demo was aging and the oldies that had been played was getting, well, too old. The advertisers are not interested in 55+. That is why the oldies format has to be continually tweaked. Slowly stop playing older songs and slowly add more recent music.

I don't know how WOGL is doing as far as revenue is, but they seem ok. They're still here! Of course, if Ben didn't come around, WOGL would have been Jack.
