My thoughts on IQ 106.9

After driving from my home in Atlantic County to Trenton 3 times this week I was able to listen to IQ 106.9 alot. As a listener, here are my thoughts.

I don't understand who's in charge. Today you had Mendte screaming about how large a supermarket is on my way to a meeting, and Michelle Jersin discussing something mindless with nobody calling in on my way home. The other day it was Casey, who was the reason I stopped listening to WKXW slandering a dead woman and making jokes nobody thought was funny, being beligerant, and also not getting any calls for the more than a half hour I was listening before I disgustedly went to Pandora. Your "IQ" has to be low to use formerly fired WKXW talk show hosts. Why were they fired? Maybe it was because nobody wanted to listen to them?

The news was bad until you guys sounded good with the whole chemical fire thing. I've read that Hillery Barski at one time was a talk show host. I hope she was good at it because she's not a good news reader. She sounds old and whoever is writing for her isn't really good at it. You need someone who is a good reader and can tell a story. She can do neither.

The weather geek idea isn't a good one. Is this guy the son of the owner or something? He sounds very amateurish and if I were them I'd bring in one of the TV weather guys in Philly and at least get a name in there who sounds good.

My only likes so far are Al Gardner who is much nicer sounding and sounds like he's someone's dad. He was a great choice. and seems very likeable. The other positive is the traffic. I found your Jersey coverage even better than WKXW. The other day I was stuck in that mess on 42 and Jeff McKay said it would take me 50 minutes to get through the delay. He was wrong but not by much. It took me 48 minutes because I timed it. WKXW didn't even have where the delay actually began right. And KYW barely talked about it. BTW, I like him alot better than Sam Clover. McKay has more energy and he's much more fun to listen to, and I think your traffic is better than KYW in the morning which is hard to imagine.

You guys really need to build this station around Gardner and McKay. They are your two best assets IMHO, and stop with the old 101.5 talk show hosts, unless you get Tommy G. I miss him at night.

I hope your station succeeds, but you need to make some changes before it gets any worse.

IQ 106.9 isn't for people with an IQ greater than 106.9

I'm not 100% confident that I remember this correctly, but I believe an IQ score of 106.9 would put you ahead of the average American score, which I believe is somewhere just under 100. We Americans test just ahead of a box of hair and a tad behind a broken rock. So, if they were to target an audience in possession of a 106.9 IQ, most Americans would not like the station because they lack the intelligence to comprehend the presentation. So, if the comment was meant to be derogatory, perhaps you should lower your target to 99 or even slightly lower

In the 90's, Hillary Barski was teamed with Big Jay Sorenson on 1210, in the 10-noon talk show slot. It didn't work then and won't work now.She just doesn't have it for the Philadelphia listeners.

Are you sure 'boutFrom what I remember, they wer on WKXW thru the mid 90's, then later on went to WPHT (think 1998?) Jay posts on these boards so he may chime in here.

Ok...here I am! I'll be keeping the slot warm from noon to 3pm this Wednesjay on the NEW I Q 106.9. Join the conversation.
By the way, Hilarie (proper spelling) is a pro with tons of experience at ABC News, Sirius/XM and with me in Dallas, Philly and NJ.
I'm doing this show as a solo btw.
Call in!

Precisely, and where are the stations that are NPR affiliates? :D

For the all the talk about reception, I was impressed with IQ 106.9's signal in Center City and South Philly. As a matter of fact, reception of IQ is better in these areas than WXTU's reception!

If they are still broadcasting from Camden, you can see the antenna sitting close to the WWB. By the way, why is that antenna have white strobes on it and all the antennas in the antenna farm have blinking red lights? Is it the loseness to the approach to the airport? White strobes better in the fog? If they are broadcasting from the backup, it is above One Liberty really close to WMMR's.

Does anyone know which transmitter is being used, Camden or Center City?

Does anyone else notice a constant high-pitched whine in the audio on 106.9 whenever the host's microphone is open? It's very annoying.

They also have a rather poor-sounding telephone hybrid. It makes all the callers sound tinny and weak. The telephone audio on 101.5 sounds much richer and more up-front.

It's quite possible that the FAA demanded strobe lights on the Camden tower because of the close proximity to the eastern approach path to PHL. In general, anything exceeding 500 ft AGL along a VFR route is given close scrutiny. Here's a link to one of the instrument approach procedures -- WWIQ's tower is the 618 ft obstruction (inbound planes are supposed to be up about 2000 ft at that distance, but you never know):

As you can see, Roxborough (tallest obstruction 1549' AMSL) is far enough north not to pose an exceptional hazard, and several of those towers were built before strobes were even approved for regular use so the red lights would be grandfathered.

I just checked the FCC CDBS site and didn't find an application on file for "license to cover" construction of the Liberty 1 auxiliary, so WWIQ shouldn't be using it yet. A possible way to confirm: Take a portable radio down to one of the platforms in SEPTA Suburban Station, leave the antenna retracted -- and if WWIQ has roughly the same strength as WMMR, the aux is probably on the air. You'll also find the little pea-shooter on 107.9 comes in better down there than any of the Roxborough Class B stations.
