My Thoughts On WQLS AM in Montgomery/Pike Road

Like the presentation I've been hearing on WQLS 1210 AM in Montgomery/Pike Road but I just don't see this station working out, unless they get a FM rebroadcast.

As of this posting, this station is still doing a commercial and ID free Classic Country format.

R.D.P. <><

P.S. If Classic Country doesn't pan out for WQLS, I wonder what format Mr. Alan Stroh will try next. Inquiring minds would love to know.

Finally today (Tuesday) I heard between songs (only once after maybe an hour, non-consecutive, of listening) "WQLS Pike Road is equipment testing. Equipment testing on WQLS Pike Road." Can we consider that headway?

That's a step in the right direction.

Hope this new station will have success and work out for Mr. Stroh.

I finally got to hear the new WQLS. They were coming in loud and clear in Cullman at around 5PM this evening. Hopefully this station will do well, even if it chooses another direction than the good music it has been playing:)

The signal reach is apparently outstanding. Even during midday, I was able to pick them up several days ago with a listenable signal (grade B - a bit weak but no static) on I-65 in Baldwin County

The authorization in the FCC db is showing the Montgomery translator at 107.5 MHz (W298BC) to be rebroadcasting WQLS. Can anyone confirm it's on the air? Looks to have a very good signal right in the middle of town. It's on the WNCF tower, which I've always found odd since it's right in the middle of a residential area.

1210 and 107.5 are now sports as "The Ticket", so far carrying WJOX's programming and Sporting News Radio updates. We'll see what happens at 2:00.

Interesting. WQLS (assuming they stay sports) won't have the reach of WMSP 740 by any means. But it's the Montgomery-area listeners who matter--and FM 107.5 will undoubtedly be where most listening takes place.

This would seem to be a ready-made affiliate for Troy Trojans football and basketball.

And what will this mean for the station (again) left out in the cold? Minor market sports player WIQR doesn't even have Prattville football to lean on anymore. I think WIQR should go ahead and corral yet another FM translator in Montgomery and switch to an all-Spanish format. Apparently the "Domingo en Espanol" experiment on Sunday afternoons and evenings is working well at WAPZ. I think 93.5 may be the optimal translator location available as long as it protects from 93.7 to the north and southeast.

And, I think WQLS actually has a greater coverage area than WMSP, especially east of say, Shorter. I know WQLS is notably stronger to the southwest with minimal if any interference.

1210's calls are now WTXK

???

Nothing's showing up on RECnet or the FCC site under those calls. Do stations just get to start using calls as soon as they request them or something?

Usually call letter changes are already reflected on the FCC database. Lately, though, there has been a lag with the database being updated. Under "call letter changes" in the station record, you'll see where a station's calls have been changed along with the effective date, but the record itself shows the previous calls. This happened a few wks ago, when WSPZ went back to the WJOX calls. The record for the station was still displaying as "WSPZ", but the call letter section was showing "WJOX" as the new calls. It took a couple of wks before the record was finally changed to "WJOX" also. I noticed though with the WTXK calls mentioned above that both the record and accompanying call letter section do not show a call letter change ever happening, and the station is still listed as WQLS. For whatever reason, the site must not be updated as quickly as it once was. ???

740 doesn't seem as strong as it has been recently. (Maybe they can go 50kw daytime only again.) 1210 blasts everywhere I go in town.
