My Uncle Duke

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has been remembering my uncle, Duke Shirlaw, and hope you will continue to do so...It means alot to us!

The pleasure is ours, I loved his late night show, he did it like a normal (though twisted as hell) person would do it.

Good times.

How can we ever forget Duke? He provided us with some of the best hours of radio this town has ever heard. His name suited him, he was truly a pioneer!

I second that.
Your Uncle was a truly talented and funny guy. My daughter was a huge fan and she got me hooked on his show too!

I second that!!! - And for a short while.. I had the best seat in the house!

I'm finding it hard to believe life goes on with one of most interesting and creative talk show hosts I have ever met or worked with.

I learned one thing about life producing his show... It's ok to be real. 8)

J.S. feel free to mail me anytime or contact me by yahoo messenger.

I have searched all over and cannot find the air checks (tapes) from his shows that I personally recorded. I'm rather disappointed in that fact.. but someday someone will make them resurface. And I would be proud to create "The best of The Middle of the Damn Night" In my own recording studio for the internet. ;)

Duke was the complete side of beef: Writer... Actor... Pundit... Wit...Producer.
I'm more familiar with him as a comedy actor and writer due to his involvment with the legendary Ajo Reporatory Company... Some of the best local talents of our time... including Cathy Dresbach and Ben Tyler.... were involved in that comedy troupe.

Unfortunately, like most in radio.... they're best appreciated after they're gone...

Nice to see the shared memories...We miss him...

Still looking for those airchecks... Beave...

Sam,

Yes sir! I could easily use a few. I don't mind producing a few shows and putting them on someone's streaming site. I have Pro Tools and it would be great if I could come up with a few of the shows.

I'm close to landing a slot in the midwest. I feel that people should have known the man and need to hear
what we all are talking about.

Yes I'm still looking for shows and outtakes, and would be willing (with family permission) to load them onto a site memorializing Duke for being the person he was, as he still lives in our hearts.

You know, we always talk about and praise the radio greats like The Real Don Steele, Robert W. Morgan, and others...and rightfully so. They are great radio legends. But there are some in radio that truly deserve the same respect, that helped continue great radio and inspire others to follow in those footsteps. Duke is one of them. :)

I agree about Duke. Don Steele and Robert W. Morgan were very good, but they weren't the best of L.A. radio. Maybe Dave Hull, Sam Riddle, Jimmy O'Neill, Charlie Tuna, and the AWESOME Emporer Bob Hudson. They're role models were KFWB's Ted Quillin, Gene Weed, Charlie O'Donnell and company.

I will always remember Duke fondly..he was there when we signed on KFYI, July 10, 1985. Duke was one of the funniest guys I ever met and I still think of him often.

respectfully,
KFYI Traffic Guy
