MyFox Fox O&O sites now online

Fox has official launched its new "MyFox" local sites this week for it's O&Os. It is being promoted heavily on WAGA Atlanta (which is due to sport the new O&O look soon).

I wonder how much confusion (if any) will be caused with the MyNetworkTV stations not owned by Fox. In Atlanta, Gannett owns MyNet station WATL "My ATL TV" and NBC WXIA "11 Alive". WATL willl launch a new newscast at 10PM on WATL called "My 11 Alive News at 10" produced by WXIA. Fox O&O WAGA's website is now myfoxatlanta.com.

This "My" intiative will fail. MyNetworkTV will fail because of the all-soap format, and MyFox portals will fail because of confusion in website promotion. Only MySpace will survive.

The MyFox sites in many markets were launched months ago. Atlanta came online this week. There are more on the way.
Anyone who looked a previous Fox O&O sites will tell you these myfox sites are a HUGE improvement.

Fox is clearly playing off their successful myspace website in the naming of the O&O web portals and the new My Network TV. However, the use of "my" in websites has been done for years - and usually to denote a customized part of a website.

No one knows what will happen with My Network TV. It might work, it might not. But there's no reason to think that Fox's overally "my" initiative will fail since the use of that name on the web has proven successful before.

Speaking of Atlanta...The old Fox O&O sites were maintained by a company here called What's Up Interactive founded by Richard Warner. He was a part-time correspondent for "Good Day Atlanta" on WAGA in 1996 when the station became the first in Atlanta with a website. He later sold the company, but it was split up again. Mr. Warner now hosts a business show for Georgia Public Broadcasting, but I do not know if he is still involved with What's Up.

The ONLY way that MY will fail is if they don't add more shows. I'm sure that as time goes on, they will add more shows and start looking like a real network.

Remember, unlike The CW, which is based on a combination of TWO pre-existing seperate networks, MY is starting from scratch. As such, the execs. at FOX need to nurse it like they did with the big FOX network for so many years.

Knowing Rupert Murdoch like we do, he will. :)

Cheers :D

I don't know that they'll add more shows. Remember, the shows debuting this week will only last 13 weeks. Then two more shows will debut in their place - with different actors and storylines.

I would just concur with your statement about Rupert Murdoch: don't bet against him. He may not win this time, but he'll find a way to figure this out eventually.

Also, I read something tonight that could complicate things somewhat when trying to compare My Network to the other guys. Apparently Nielsen will report ratings for each My Network show once a week with an average of all 5 nights. They won't break out each day of each show like the traditional networks because My Network is selling the shows as a strip. My Network says they'll have the individual ratings available to advertisers, but I suspect that means it won't be available overnight to us.

One other note in the story was that My Network has apparently fallen far short of its advertising sales goal. Instead of the 50 million they thought they would get, they're at about 20 million. I'm amazed it's that high considering how fast this has been thrown together. It's not like the CW shows where the advertisers have some idea of what they're buying. I would imagine that more advertising dollars will flow to the network after advertisers have had a chance to see how it performs.

If they get stuck they can rerun some old Prisoner: Cell Block H reruns from Australia. The Aussies know how to make a good soap opera.

:)

If you want to see WDAF's website, go to http://www.myfoxkc.com- although we are not promoting it yet.

For the record, I strongly dislike promoting My Network TV when Meredith Broadcasting owns the MNTV affiliate in town. That's an affiliate running a 9pm newscast directly opposite of my 9pm newscast on Fox 4. I might as well promote CSI, Grey's Anatomy, and Dateline NBC too. 401k be damned, I hope MNTV fails.

Let's see...so far the four Fox O&Os that have not changed their websites are WJW in Cleveland, KDVR in Denver, WITI in Milwaukee, KSTU in Salt Lake City, KTBC in Austin, and WOGL in Gainesville. Am I right?

Fox's WBRC-TV (Birmingham, AL) is doing the same, using 'myfoxal.com'. No, not "MyFoxAlabama", but simply 'AL'.

It's too early to speculate on MyNetworkTV's success, but I agree with you on the 'MyFox' branding. It's stupid and unnecessary.
