PENNSYLVANIA
AM Class C Top 10 Mkt New Tower & Transmitter (3 Yrs) w/ HD Upgrade New Automation System $7M OBO

Well, top 10 market in PA pretty much narrows the field down. HD upgrade and new automation system seems to smack of WHAT, no? Any other ideas of what this mystery station might be? More importantly, anyone have a spare 7 mil???????

I can't believe no one has responded to this post.

If it is WHAT, we have a station that changed hands in the last 18 months for 5-million. It's already on its second format and now it's on the market for 2-million more? Very interesting, if it is indeed the station in question.

I guess someone's going to have to find that out...

I was besides myself when I read it, so, I didn't reply ... and really can't now, except to say, $7-million for, uh, WHAT? Anyone nibbles on this (and I'd bet it's a tire-kickin' "see what sticks out there" ... knowing that price won't be realized,) I've got some property in Washington Township, NJ I'd like to sell you.

I'm not familiar with the newer designations... Is Class "C" the old Class "IV"?

Could this also describe the largely useless Clear Channel property on 1480 (ex-WDAS; assuming the calls have changed)?

I never considered WUBA/DAS-AM. It's a possibility, but since I was reading with the "BuySellRadio" mentality, I automatically assumed it was Martini Lounge Radio. Of course, no one would know for sure unless they get brave and contact the broker to do some sniffing. Also, it could be another station that might have the HD Radio equipment on board, but just didn't fire it up as of yet.

Perhaps time for Mr. Kelly to call the Racket and address?

Tom has called the Racket a couple of times in the past; I'm sure he wouldn't mind spending a couple minutes disputing/confirming this report. I mean, it's not in the Racket's best interest to throw Mr. Kelly under the bus...

Philadelphia Station For Sale

I'm actually hoping it isn't WHAT, as it's refreshing to see good, local ownership in 2007 of what otherwise would be considered a throwaway signal. Word is spreading about Martini Lounge, albeit slowly, but it is happening. I'd hate to see what probably will be the last chance to hear this kind of music on Philadelphia [terrestrial] radio yield to brokered religion, informercials, or programming done in a language fewer than 1% of the folks in the signal's already small footprint can understand.

Then again, nobody in his right mind could blame Tom Kelly for taking $7M. The $2M difference, over just the year since he bought the place, even minus operating costs, engineering upgrades, taxes, and brokers' fees, may seem like small change in the world of hundred-plus-million-dollar radio deals. But that $1-2M could make him a GIANT in the world of Internet-delivered audio, especially if done right.

(And those I know who enjoy SkinRadio weren't even aware the station lost its "main" signal until I told them.)

For The "I" Team

For what it's worth, a quick check of Scott Fybush's online archive shows the WHAT tower collapse was in the middle of 2003. I seem to recall the station broadcasting from a longwire or something for a time afterward, which would put the new tower's construction right around: three years ago.

I think it's pretty obvious the station referenced here is either WHAT or WDAS, and I'm guessing the former. The blurb said "new tower", and not "towers". And WDAS isn't a Class IV station, I'm pretty sure.

"Thrown under the bus..."

Gee, where have I heard that before?? Hmmmmmmmmmm....

[ahem]

If it IS WHAT for sale, I'd hate to see MLR disappear from the airwaves. It is an enjoyable format and it's music that isn't heard anymore. With the limited signal, you gotta draw people in. Making the programming unique will get listeners, even through static.

Although, the new owner could do (and SHOULD do) something different/unique, like "broker" (LMA?) the signal to one of the 24/7 local music sites (Hy Lit Radio or Radio Philly Style) to give them an OTA outlet (and promotion/revenue vehicle). Plus, the new owner (Or even Mr. Kelly, if he chose to go this route) wouldn't have to pay a staff outside of a sales/engineering crew.

Maybe they'll do what they did with Skin Radio and move it to Internet-only...

Trivia question for ya, R-squared: Who was the first advertiser on the old Skin Radio?

The Radio Racket!

KJCB,

It's NOT "extended band", but, rather, EXPANDED band. Does this mean WTTM-1680 is up for sale?
