MyNetworkTV

Does anyone know how MNTV is doing? Since they are just a programming service now, the ratings are difficult to find. Do they outperform ION? What's really the purpose of MyTV anymore? They originate none of their programming....they are just re-runs...wouldn't the locals somehow do better by just programming their own sitcoms/dramas/game shows for those two hours on a local level? I'm guessing the affiliates benefit financially somehow? They do provide a brand, that's all I can think of.

I know they really aren't, but IMO MyNet affiliates are the closest to independents you'll find. All My does is supply two hours of reruns five nights a week and provide branding.

In other words, they learned their lesson from that little "telenovelas" game they played a few years ago. Hopefully they're smart enough to never make that mistake again. Oi.

I still remember the forgettable "Fashion House" with Bo Derek. Brutal.

Here's my question: I remember finding on their Wikipedia page about them planning a talk show similar to what's on late night....Are they still planning on it, or did they "ix-nay on the idea-ay"?

In 2008/2009 they actully had some okay originals, with The Twilight Zone

Was that a new TZ series or repeats from the early 2000's UPN series?

They were repeats from the UPN version.

Then, remember those shows such as Celebrity Expose and that NFL show that came after Fashion House and the other telenovelas.
Terrible.

Yeah....MNTV is better off in its current state. I know it would NEVER happen, but it would be nice if ION and MyNetworkTV combined their shows on a network or something, since they attract similar viewers probably...

For what it's worth, I recall reading a comment from the head of programming for MyNetworkTV where he said that they get about 2 million viewers. That was some time ago and I have no frame of reference for the statistic.

That said, the whole point of My Network TV was to fill the prime-time hours on the Fox owned UPN affilates when that network disappeared. Many station owners were surprised when the WB/UPN merger was announced. Worse, the CW had some pretty difficult financial demands for potential new affiliates. As I recall, they demanded stations pay to be CW affiliates and they gave them very few advertising avails during programming. Fox was not going to be allowed to make any of their UPN stations CW affiliates and likely didn't want to under the terms CW was demanding.

Fortunately for Fox, they had been working on syndicating two english-language telenovelas long before this merger happened. They quickly pulled the telenovelas from the syndication marketplace and turned it into the basis for the new My Network TV. Along with Fox, many of the other stations owners left out in the cold by the WB/UPN merger jumped at the chance to join Fox's My Network Tv. Even better, My Network Tv offered a very good financial deal to stations. Stations don't pay the network and get half the advertising avails during prime time. Indeed, many stations could have far lower ratings than the CW but still make more money simply because they had so much more advertising to sell. It has largely worked.

My Network TV ditched the telenovelas because they didn't perform up to expectations and they were more expensive to produce than originally thought. But the shows bought Fox some time to figure out what to do with My Network Tv long-term. Ultimately they tried other original scripted shows with little success. They won the rights to WWE and that worked well for them. They tried to make ultimate fighting a popular sport, but couldn't. They did other reality shows with some success. Finally they've settled on game shows and reruns. It's inexpensive programming and likely gets decent numbers compared to CW and previous My Network Tv programming. I suspect the affilites are generally pleased with what they've got. They didn't jump into this thinking My Network Tv was going to be another Fox or NBC. It is what it is and it's doing what it should be doing: fill the prime time hours with inexpensive programming that draws some numbers and can be sold to advertisers. Not sure you could expect much more.

All it's going to take is a couple of station groups to bolt like Sinclair for example and it's over for my network tv assuming of course the ratings are down.

Actually the block of "5th Grader" and "Don't Forget the Lyrics" on Tuesday are new episodes that have not aired in the Monday-Friday syndication block.
Although I tape the daytime syndicated "Lyrics" and by the time those episodes make it to prime time I've usually seen them.

"Monk" is a very good show. Never having had cable, I missed most of the episodes. They had a few on ABC in 2002 and 2003, and a few more on NBC during a strike.

No. My Network TV will survive as long as Fox needs it to fill the hole on its O&O stations. Dozens of other stations have the same need and My Network TV fills that role quite well.
There is no reason for Sinclair or any other group to leave My Network TV at this point.

I think the affiliates are too complacent with the idea of a brand, even if it is worthless.

The Fox owned stations and affiliates would rather follow the cookie cutter model than build up a local brand for each station.
