Myrtle Beach Radio

I am not one to post lately on the boards but I had to bring this to someone's attention.

Being in the business for the past 14 years and working in markets like Orlando, Boston and Memphis just to name a few, you pick up things that just start to annoy you..

You can say that Myrlte Beach kinda has a little Top 40 war ging on. But... and there is a huge but...You have WSEA (HOT 100) and WWXM (Mix 97.7) both using the same moniker "The #1 Hit Music Station".

Now please tell me how confusing this is to the listeners with diaries?

Also it is amazing how far these two stations are behind musically as opposed to markets like NY, Hartford, even Colorado Springs (Markets #1,#51 and #97)

It's odd, but the listeners don't care. As for diaries, it's unlikely that anyone will lose credit because of the slogan. The number one method of recall is dial position.

What annoys some of us is when people travel to other markets and then pronounce another market "behind". Most people travel, it's not like the program directors in Myrtle Beach have never been to the big city. This whole Internet phenomenon makes it all unnecessary anyway. Half the broadcasting world complains that all markets play "all the same music" because they are all "cookie cutter" formats and then now and again we get a complaint that one or another station is "behind". Are these two stations not adding new music fast enough for you? What makes them so "behind"?

chickontheradio.. you do make some valid points.

for example-most stations have been on Rhianna's Unfaithfull 2-3 months prior to Myrtle Beach adding it. I think being in the market, PD's should be more aggressive with their playlist. Small markets are great places to break records before anyone else.

Now on the other hand should Top 40 Radio Stations still be playing Soul Decision in a regular rotation? Answer no but 1 station here is... Maybe the PD is out of touch.
Most Top 40 Stations around the US are getting younger PD's. Orlando's WXXL has Tommy Chuck who is 25. Great PD!! and young. This is a new trend in CHR radio. Maybe someone who is in their 40's cannot relate to the 12+ demos...

Just my 2 cents...

are u the same jay michaels who used to work on hot100? i heard u were fired. just keeping it real, u really weren't that good. could these be "sour grapes" you're spitting on this board?

For someone who has such a deep resume as yourself, I assume you know how ratings are determined...cume, TSL, AQH, correct?

In markets such as Boston, Hartford & Orlando, the CHR's thrive on cume...and when the population is such as those markets, you are constantly turning cume over. In a market the size of Myrtle Beach, the population is much smaller, therefore less cume to turn over.

How else can you gain greater AQH? Increase your TSL.

A deeper gold base to go along with a high turnover current rotation can lead the listener to belive you are not playing the same songs over and over again and - hopefully - increasing your TSL.

Maybe they saw good research on Souldecision?? Do you know? Or are you basing that on your opinion of the record?

As for the age of the PD...you did mention Boston, right? Caddilac Jack is NOT 25 and he still programs one of the most successful CHR's in the country (and a successful Rhythmic CHR too!). Think before you write stuff like that, ok?

I was not fired from Hot 100. I left before the current PD was in place...After Dan Jordan left I decided to leave on my own. Dont believe everything you hear...

It is cool that you think I was not that great. No hard feelings. Everyone has their opinion..

As for the better CHR station it is Hot 100 they seem to play the new music first. Mix 97.7 doesn't sound that good of a CHR at Noon they lean away from CHR and on the weekend with that show that should be on a Hot AC station like Cool 104.9. Now with slogans Hot 100 says the new #1 hit music station while Mix doesn't say new. But why doesn't one just go with this slongan "Playing All The Hits" Hot 100.

First and foremost, what I'm about to say is JUST my opinion, nothing more or less.

I travel to Myrtle Beach about once a month, and listen to a LOT of radio. Personally, I think both Mix 97.7 and Hot 100 sound bad. When I think of a GREAT Hot AC station, I think of Kiss 95.1 in Charlotte or Star 102.1 in Knoxville. The Hot AC in Myrtle Beach just isn't "there" for me.

When I'm in town, I listen to either one of the classic rock stations or 98.5. I USED to like the Oldies station, but I personally think it sucks now since Dave left. It doesn't give me the warm-fuzzies like it once did.

Now that I've been incredibly negative, I'll hush now. But I'm negative ONLY because I love listening to the radio and I wish I had some better choices when I'm sipping my chick-drinks, working on my tan, and decompressing from the life that is radio! :)

Wait I thought Kiss 95.1 Charlotte, NC is CHR/POP not Hot AC now.

Overall he is right about Myrtle Beach radio it isn't that great. 98.5 Kiss FM sucks its a mix of Urban AC and CHR/Rhythmic. The so called AC station here Star 92.1 sounds like it went Hot AC as they are playing more currents now. And the one that used to be Hot AC Cool 104.9 now sounds like AC. Thankfully I can pull in some of the Charleston stations such as B 92, Sunny 96.9

SO what are you doin Jay Michaels have not heard you on any radio here in the south but you always have comment to say aboutother stations that sucks and etc.

Some vacation observations...

I realize this thread is just a little old, but I visited the Grand Strand for four days last week, and I thought about the conversation we had a few months ago.

The newest addition to Grand Strand radio is Bob. I have to say, while I generally despise that sort of format, BOB has some pretty good imaging. However, if I want to listen to an iPod, I'll use my own and pick the music myself.

I noticed that Sunny 106.5, in my opinion, is even more stale than it was six weeks ago when I last visited. It's a shame, really, because this station used to give me the warm-fuzzies.

Again, I was surprised that there's no real station I would define as "Hot AC". My girlfriend kept asking me to find a station that sounds like mine (we program real Hot AC), but I just couldn't. Mix 97.7 was the closest, but was more like CHR to me, and it seemed to be the most popular...I heard it playing inside a lot of businesses. However, I was surprised that there are some great new songs which aren't on their playlist, and they are playing the heck out of some pretty old ones.

My wonderful girlfriend (who knows nothing about the radio business, bless her heart) summed up our listening experience more simply than any of us radio guys probably ever could..."radio sucks down here because there are too many ads, and all the stations play them at the same time". Hey, being an owner, I'm all about making money, but even I agree that there are way too many ads on the air in Myrtle Beach. How do you guys who live there stand it? Then again, if everybody's doing it, what alternative do you have?
