I could never figure out why there was this total "Charleston purge" from MB cable. When I lived there in the 1990s, I got channels 2/4/5/7 from Charleston clear as a bell with one of the larger Radio Shack log periodic VHF/UHF antennas, and reception was actually easier than with the co-located FMB stations (13/15/21) near Hamer in Dillon County (South of the Border). Wilmington was also very easy to pick up.

Charleston stations are also the easiest to pick up in North Myrtle Beach. Because of the way the coastline curves, you've got almost a total path over water.

Me neither. The stations were very easy to receive OTA until the end of the analog era, especially in southern Horry County. You could even get them on a Walkman 70+ miles away. Before the FM band got packed several Charleston stations had listenership as far as Myrtle Beach. 96.9 still does as classic hits.

WWAY was on the Myrtle Beach cable lower than WPDE for a long time. Myrtle Beach wouldn’t import WTAT even though it was a very good Fox affiliate. It wasn’t until FoxNet started in 1991 that Fox was available there.
