It appears GRock in NJ recently started doing this sort of thing Friday nights - which is when my show (which plays a lot of new music from a variety of sources) has been on public radio in the market for a bit longer than a year. It's nice to feel programmed-against...My take: calling it a "MySpace band show" almost guarantees that this (commendable, actually) drive toward playing new music will be taken for a fad and burnt out in short order. The MySpace 'cachet' won't last forever (some days, it seems like it won't last 'til tomorrow, it's such a kludge) and I don't think it's such a good idea to hitch too tightly to that wagon. When 'the kids' find 'the next big thing' they'll have to chase it.But MySpace is a really good tool for increasing the possibility of a random shot at hearing good new music - though it increases the possibility of hearing really bad new music, too. As has been said, PureVolume is another good resource, as is an ear for simply paying attention to outlets like the specialty shows at BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music, not to mention WFMU, who value quality over ratings. (And then the trick is to craft what you hear into a unique identity, and not just accept what they play as, by default, right for you.)Of course, that takes work, but what'd you expect...the "easy" button? ;o)
