Mysterious MXL V12??

NOT the widely available V6..but the V12

What is the deal with this mic? Called a "European Release", and not much on the internet about this mic. A guy I spoke with today told me that Marshall released it, and decided that it woud cost too much for them to make and sell in the US and make a profit at thier (MXL's) economy price point. Only a couple hundred made?

I heard a track using this mic and was completely blown away (unless I was bamboozled and it was a fake..but I don't think so)

So what do you guys know about this "mysterious" microphone? Now I may need to find one.

Apparantly it's this stick-like object that you speak into so your voice can be recorded, amplified, or broadcast. What? You said ANYTHING! ;D

Found two of them..and bought them..will report soon..Does ANYONE know ANYTHING about this thing?

Everything I've seen says that it's got a beefy, transformer coupled sound, with a bright, but open high end unlike other MXL mics. It's supposedly not thin or brittle at all, both of which are pretty common to Chinese mics.

Jeff,

I found a podcast that talks about the MXL V6 & V12 here. It's about half way into the podcast. According to the reporter, the V12 was made for only a short time, and available only in Europe. Only a couple hundred were made. It was an earlier mic than the V6 or M3, and was apparently the first in the Silicon Valve series of "large diaphragm cardioid condenser microphones that provides the sound of a tube without the noise and drawbacks of multiple cables and external power supplies. The unique design employs solid-state FET amplifier techniques to simulate what tubes do naturally." (From Marshall website).

The podcast has a mic comparison between the V6, V12, and a Neumann TLM-49. It starts about half way through the podcast. The reviewers like the V6 and TLM-49 much better than the V12.

There's also a V12 discussion here.

Like all mics, it's all about how your voice sounds on that hardware.

v6 sounded better to me than the v12.But that TLM49 with the Aphex 230 sounded great.May have to spring for that TLM49.It is worth the money>>>>now Jeff will sound great on any mic, even a radio shack electret condenser in a toilet paper tube....

Damn Menotti..you must have been spying on me..those electret/toilet paper tube mic chains are awesome!

I am a HUGE fan of the TLM49 as everyone knows here..but I want to add two secondary mics at both fixed studios, and these V12s sounded like a good backup. The sample i heard was a female voice talent, and it really sounded great on a girl..
