Mystery station on 1100KHZ

First. A belated thank you to all Veterans.

SW Ohio
11/11/2010
1100 KHZ

WTAM usually dominates the frequency here in SW Ohio.

Although subject to frequent fading, there was another station audible last night. Listened between 10:15 - 110:55 pm Eastern. Used my PRD-5 to null WTAM. Faded out on the half hour. Had to take a phone call just before the hour.

The station was airing a conservative talk show hosted by a female, but couldn't get her name other than there was a "Dr." in front of it. She took no callers and was interviewing the publisher of the Century City News. If I were to guess, I'd say it was Dr. Laurie Roth.

I've checked the WZFG Dilworth MN web site, but they don't show Roth on their schedule. Neither does KFNX in Cave Creek AZ.

Anyone have an idea what the station on 1100 has a female late evening host?

Both KFNX Phoenix AZ & WZFG Fargo ND carry 'The Dr. Daliah Show' over the weekend. Could either of these be rebroadcasting?

Could Dr. Laura have been in an earlier time slot on WZFG? Normally she's on 12-3am CST, preceeded by Lars Larson.

This was definitely a conservative talk program. Looked up Dr. Daliah & her program is strictly medical.

I'll listen to the online streams tonight, something I should have done last night.

I experienced the same station last night, where I was dx'ing about 50 miles due west of Orlando. I heard the Dr. Laura (I had misunderstood the last name as Roth), I believe one of her promos said she was the Annie Oakley of talk radio. Normally where I was last night and at my usual dx post in St. Petersburg, 1110 WTAM Cleveland only comes in during late fall and early winter, and it had been coming in well, but last night WTAM was underneath this other station. I did hear several ads for resorts in Bronson, Missouri, but of course I realize that may not have been national ads and on radio locator I did not find any local 1100 AM stations in the Bronson.

I was listening about the same time (from 9:55 pm Eastern Standard Time) till about 10:20 and there was no TOH I.D. whatsoever.

I woke up around 3 AM early this morning and the carrier w/o any programming was still strong and I could hear WTAM in the background.

It seemed to be coming in best in the same general direction as Cleveland's WTAM.

If the program was a tape delay, it was a recent tape delay as she mentioned it was Veterans' Day and was interviewing a man from California that had two sons in the military.

KKLL Webb City, MO is listed as being a daytimer, with a "supposed" sign-off time
(November, after DST ends) of 5:00 PM CST.

Were they practicing for "Friday Night Lights"? ;D Someone should check tonight!

When I null WTAM here, I don't hear this mystery station, but rather I'm getting a strong Spanish station with frequent announcements that sound like "RADIO CANCUN!" and talk of Mexico. I'd like to wish this was XECAN but I can't be certain. I also hear a distant third station way down in there playing some kind of music.

Per Mediavayasa, the Mexican media directory, 1100 has migrated to FM. At some point in the next few months, all AM stations in the state of Quintana Roo will have moved to FM as well as those in Tabasco, Yucatan and Campeche.

Definitely Dr. Laurie Roth.

Listened to the streams from the likely suspects, KNZZ Grand Junction (Western range) & WZFG MN. Neither were streaming Laurie Roth.

Friday, 10:00 PM (Eastern) through 11:09 PM. No station I.D. on the hour or half hour, just IRN news.

Must be a daytimer continuing to run at night.

Signal is best when my antenna is directed 280 degrees, which also minimizes WTAM's signal.

Could be KKLL, but alas, not ID.

I never been able to hear this mysterious talk station on 1100, but I can sometimes hear a regional Mexican music (or similar kind of Spanish music) on another 1100 and I am thinking ...could it be WWWE Hapeville, GA (near Atlanta)? Not able to ID however.

I was finally able to positively ID my mystery Mexican on 1100 the other night, and this could be the same station you're referring to since they do play regional Mexican music. What I thought was "RADIO CANCUN!" is actually XETGO "RADIO CAÑÓN!" (pronounced Can-yon) - a 1,780 mile catch for me. One source says they are running only 5kw.

Thanks for this info - good to know.

XETGO is apparently licensed for 5kW (daytime) from what I've seen, too, but their nighttime power is reportedly 400 watts. If that's true you've got a really good catch.

Kilokat and jd, you may be right. That's a one heck of a catch. WWWE may actually be a daytimer. I've been hearing a lot of weird stations last night, mostly I believe from Cuba and probably Mexico, if those Mexicans haven't yet moved to FM.

On 550 kHz I heard a lady speaking Spanish and a piano played in the background. On 1250 I heard what sounded like very early country&western and easy listening with vocals all together in English. A male announcer doesn't seem to identify this station. My loop antenna was pointing toward southwest-west (toward TX and OK). ??? A mystery station on 1250 kHz. All this was in the middle of the night.

The 1100Khz station was listenable all last week, subject to major fading. Last night (Sun) they were running syndicated old time radio programs. No I.D. at the half hour. Woke up at 4:05 AM today & heard them under WTAM.

Anyone have a clue?

I guess I could call the owners of KKLL, but why spoil the fun?

I also heard the old time radio programs during the 9 - 10 pm hour (Eastern) on both Saturday and Sundays (Saturday night - "The Great Gildersleeve" from 9 - 9:30) it obvious that whoever this is; they can't be bothered with giving legal i.d.'s.

OK this is my first post on this thread....

Does anybody have any idea where this thing is coming from? Is it a legal station that just happens to "forget" IDing? If there is old time radio & the station is legal, maybe Radio-Locator can narrow it down. (Maybe the station has a website.)

I live in south FL....any chance for me hearing this thing?

Is there a chance to narrow down the location of this thing, based on these other posts & signal strength?

During my drives between Columbus and Chicago the past few days, WTAM was putting a monster signal into Indiana and Chicagoland both Friday and Sunday nights. My mystery station from this weekend comes from 670, where some station playing Rihanna's "Only Girl" (think that's the song) was riding all over WSCR around Decatur, Indiana right at 9 p.m. Sunday. I think that's on the outer edge of WSCR's cancellation zone but this music was very listenable.

Wonder if this could be a new station testing their daytime antenna? There are quite a few applications shown on the FCC web site.

Have any of our Western posters has heard the station?

I heard it last night faintly under WTAM in north Alabama. I would have not even noticed it if this thread was not going. Old time radio show was playing. It's not coming from around here, unless it's very low power.

THIS THREAD has some info about WWWE/1100 in Atlanta changing formats with a couple of posts referring to them staying on at night.

Also we need to check out WSGI with a nostalgia format and WGPA with a variety format. Both daytimers have streams that could be checked against what is heard OTA.
