Mystery station on 1610

DXers have been noticing for the last few days a station on 1610KHz with a continuous 1KHz tone, no announcements.

This station is being heard coast-to-coast. At night it's easiy heard on a car radio in Nashville, Tenn. - and in Chicago - and in Boston - and with larger antennas, in Astoria, Oregon and Scandanavia.

Triangulation suggests this station is somewhere in Virginia or Maryland. One DXer said he could hear it all day long in Washington.

Are others hearing this station during the day in Washington? Anyone got a better idea what/where this is?

The Army has operated temporary test stations in the expanded-band before deploying them overseas, and my gut feeling is that's what's going on here. The only station to ever hold a full 10kw/1kw permit on 1610 surrendered that permit years ago - in any case, that station was in Texas. This one definitely isn't. The two Canadian stations on 1610 are accounted for.
