Mystery station on 87.5 fm

I've been picking up off and on what seems like a pirate station at 87.5. It broadcasts irregularly and I've not notice any form of identification. The format consists of MOR standards, radio dramas at night, and currently old Christmas standards. After a week of being off the air, I heard them again today. In the west San Fernando Valley they come in fairly weak and the signal improves somewhat as you travel south on the 101 towards Van Nuys. Can anyone solve this mystery?

More than likely it's another pirate. Ever since the DTV transition, the old Channel 6 audio frequencies (87.5 through 87.9) have been a hotbed for pirate activity in many parts of the country. Here in the Boston area (where I am situated) the 87.7 and 87.9 frequencies are loaded with pirates (in addition to formerly empty DX frequencies up and down the dial where the pirates congregate). Don't be surprised if more stations set up shop in the area throughout So. Cal. Even with XETV in Tijuana (south of San Diego) still on the air on analog Channel 6, the pirates don't care and fire up anyway. And unfortunately, the FCC seems powerless to stop them.

At least this pirate has good taste in programming!

If only it were legal. ;)

Could be a wireless headphone adapter. I had one that the default channel was 87.5 and I used it to broadcast my computer audio to a portable radio so I could listen in the bathroom while I shaved, showered and all that.

I'm in Iowa now though so its is not me and I was in North Hollywood anyway. Mine would only go about 75 feet from the transmitter but the one being noted could be souped up (intentionally or not) which would technically make this one a Pirate. By the observations it does more seem to be someone extending some kind of streaming programming to another room like what I was doing rather than a budding broadcaster

I am the originator of 87.5, which played old-time radio and dramas with no commercials or id.
For the past 28 yrs, I have had no problems with the FCC regulatory personnel.
However, on January 15th they came to my house and left me a notice to show cause why I should
continue operation with no authority.

In previous encounters, we are a community repeater site, they informed me as long as I avoided
88 to 108 mHz they had no jurisdiction.

I have followed the orders on their citation and turned off 87.5 mHz, a type accepted transmitter on 1/16/2010.
I have put in two calls to Mr. Wayne Lang, (no response) at the FCC office in Cerritos questioning his decision.
Here is his phone number should you wish to inquire about my low-power station being shut down: (562) 865-0598.

Sincerely,

John B

Another old time American radio station lost to foreigners...

Where is our country going?

Time to close the borders!
