MYX 12+

Looks like WMYX may want to consider "Jack" or something else with their latest 12+ share. Are those old WNUW calls still available?

If they do decide to do a variety hits type format, they should make it sound like Charlie in Madison. I got a change to hear WCHY for a few hours the other day and it sounded great.

So far WMYX has:

Whatever, Whenever Weekends (Now known as Mix It Up Weekends)
Whatever, Whenever Nights (Now known as Mix It Up Nights)

and now "Mix It Up On Demand" where if someone calls and requests a song, whatever it is they'll most likely play it as long as its within the Hot AC or Jack format.

With the additions of Nights and On Demand, its getting closer and closer.
______________

Do you think there is room for a Jack in Milwaukee even if the Brew already exists? Jack type stations play plenty of classic rock as well as lots of 80s music.

I still say AC is the biggest format hole in Milwaukee. If either MYX or KTI would shift to AC they both would end up benefiting.

If Infinity Broadcasting were in the Brew City, you can almost guarantee that they would put a Jack in Milwaukee, even with The Brew already on the air. I believe there's room for Jack, but I don't know if Milwaukee Radio Alliance or Saga will put a Jack on their signals. Entercom might have a Jack clone if they decide to switch from Hot AC to Variety. CC won't touch Jack when the corporates have already mentioned they're not interested in the variety format (typically Jack). I'm not even going to mention suburban stations as many serve the areas their signals are heard best and pick formats that local advertisers like to support, except for Nextmedia which wants to make WEXT out to be a Milwaukee station.

I don't know if either would benefit for AC. AC as a whole is starting to sound more Hot than light (lite) in most parts of the country. With that in mind, WMYX and WKTI might be better off as competitors for Hot AC, IMHO.

I personally think WEXT would make a good canidate for AC. It started as satellite Hot AC (WZXA "Sunny 104.7") and went country in 1997 when Pride Communications (Now NextMedia) bought it. Since NextMedia seems to own a lot of AC stations like WZSR and WSSR, I'd think they could possibly try it on 104.7 since Milwaukee lacks an AC.

WEXT could go AC, if they wanted to drop country. The only problem is 104.7 doesn't cover enough of the market for the station to generate big ratings, especially with 104.9 WTKM being not too far in Hartford. If Nextmedia could find a different frequency to try AC (if they wanted to), they would need a frequency that doesn't have a 1st adjacent somewhere in the market. At least Bliss's 92.1 & 92.5 don't interfere with each other in Milwaukee and nearby suburbs. And we know Bliss isn't going to make EZ92 out to be a Milwaukee station. So no one even try to suggest that.

You are right that CC is not interested in Jack. They have few Variety Hits stations at all, especially in larger markets. They do own a semi-Variety hits station in Des Moines. They would never do the format in Milwaukee because it would hurt the Brew, besides their entire cluster is doing well right now.

I don't think that's true. Yes, WLTQ was certainly more hot than lite their last few years and WLIT/Chicago has gotten much hotter. However, there are still many many "real" ACs. Some Midwestern examples include WLTE/Minneapolis, KEZK/St Louis, and WYXB/Indianapolis. These stations aren't as soft as they used to be, but they are AC and nothing close to Hot AC. If either MYX or KTI shifted in this direction they could fill the format hole and gain lot's of 35-54 females and office listening, while the remaining station would also benefit by being the only Hot AC.

It would be kind of silly for 104.7 to do AC when their coverage isn't much better than 92.1. I know 92.1's tower is on 94 in northern Racine County, and I thought 104.7's tower was in Oak Creek in the far SE corner of Milwaukee County, so basically 104.7 is only a few miles north of 92.1, but farther east. 104.7 might have overall better coverage than 92.1, but if 92.1 can only get in the low to mid 1's, I wouldn't expect 104.7 to do much better than a 2 share.

I think MYX will stick with Hot AC, but they do need to fix things up. Remember, MYX was the first station in the country to use the name "The Mix". As with Clear Channel and KIIS in Los Angeles (the first Top 40 called "Kiss"), this is more valuable to Entercom than whatever the station pulls in revenue-wise. If I recall, they used this as a bargaining chip against Clear Channel when they came after Entercom for calling their station "Kiss". Entercom played the "Mix" card and CC backed off.

MYX just needs to get their heads on straight. Their wannabe-'Jack' programming really bit 'em in the ass.
______________
