Mind boggling. Absolutely mind boggling. Hell, at KLUV in the late 80s we could have a jock meeting.....and 30 minutes later Ned would call and know every detail of what was said/discussed. Paula Street thought Hubcap Carter was Ned. Hubcap thought I was Ned. I always thought Steve Eberhart was Ned. Hmmmmmmm..... Interestingly enough, every jock in town had ideas who Ned was/is.
Ned is a blind man who lives in a facility in Ft. Worth with other like people who need assistance in caring for themselves.
He began calling DJ's decades ago. I used to get calls from him when I worked in Sherman in the mid 70s, then throughout my time in Dallas radio.
When we moved to Austin briefly, he even called me while I was on the air there!
I've been "off the air" as a jock for over 10 years (I don't count V/T). Somehow, using NED radar, he found me at traffic. I've been talking to Ned since 1980.
My first caller, on my first shift, at The Eagle in '87 was good old Ned. It was pretty funny because he knew all about me, that my former shift was mid-days at WLS-FM, and that I was married. I thought at first he was a "setup". Later on I figured out that "Your friend Ned" was just "Plugged In" to Dallas radio.
As far as callers go he was a nice guy to chat with, plus he understood when you were busy and needed to go. From what I remember he pretty much called anybody with a heartbeat and a request line in the market, as an aside he was a wealth of information and gossip. He could probably write a killer book on DFW radio.
Seems like a few of Ned's calls were put on the air at KVIL. I may just recall others speaking of him. But that came to mind as I was reading through this thread.
Heard from Ned this week, good to know he is still with us. Another guy that called all the time when I was at Kzps & Kdge was Eugene.
He was a mentally retarded guy that lived in Oak Cliff. No matter when I worked, He would call. I wonder what ever happened to him.
