NAB is in town!

What are you doing?
Stuck at the station because management wants no dead air? :(
Or
Busy entourageing with corporate to keep the money flowing. ::)
Or
Hitting up all the user groups and seminars for the next technology admin wants to push.
Or
Cruising the exhibits trying to keep your legacy equipment alive. :-\

Speak your mind. :p

I'm a cruiser and really need my yearly laugh at the HD Radio booth. It's been funny since 1998. Yep... it's been that long. That's 15 years worth of technological failure.

Thats funny!
Two years ago I stopped at the continental transmitter booth. I saw the same 30 year old 816 with a new digital exciter and I darn near died! We have been rippin' those boxes out and throwing in NV 20's 30's and 40's like gangbusters. The ones we tore out could be cleaned up and put on continental's showroom floor!
With a high mileage tube, those transmitters aren't worth very much(relatively) and those stations would rather go with a no tune, Ethernet fed Nautel box. Its putting engineers out of business! The only thing they need to do is change the air filter!

I had to ask the HD honchos... where are the portable AM HD radios? All of them just glared at me when I mentioned that AM IBOC is a complete failure that has been surpassed by wifi and cell phone technology.

The demo vehicles blasting HD FM stations weren't much better, highlighting how terribly distorted this digital hybrid really is. Definitely not a proud moment for the HD alliance at this year's NAB.

Also, There was very little highlighting AM/FM broadcasting. It's all about MEDIA CONVERGENCE. Somehow I feel like OTA radio is going to go the way of the horse & Buggy. It'll be around, but not like in the glory days.

No 816's on the floor this year.

They just started making equipment for 4k, and now their talkin about 8k!!!

Where was patomac instruments?

I saw three different ATSC exciters with the same modulator card.

Ham reception was cool.

Didn't even have time for the south hall.

Tektronics didn't have any scopes!

Frank foti and the Omnia crew is killin it with the processors,
And now the telos line...

I commented to a person at the iBiquity booth that "AM HD is the worst thing to happen to AM radio since Leonard Kahn sued... and effectively killed... AM stereo"

I got the distinct impression that the technical history of AM radio is something those folks know nothing about.

Enjoyed walking around trying to find something really new. Not much. New paint, some new plugs on old gear, Nothing really thrilling. Radio was busy but nothing I did not already know about. Favorite sections, Sunday Morning and afternoon Nautel Users Group sessions, Broadcast Warning Working Group meeting, Barry Mishkind's luncheon and the Ham reception. Mostly a fellowship thing and trying to see if anything was really good sneaking up on us. For a Las Vegas Broadcast engineer, I'm lucky to get out for half days. Monday morning's failure on KLAV while on my way to to work cut even that time short. Fortunately that was a simple fix.
