Coming to Charlotte next week for the NAB...looking for great local food. Saw a place called The Penguin...looks like a local legend kind of place. Any other suggestions from locals?
 
Would definitely recommend The Penguin! Try the pork chop sandwich with a side of fried pickle chips. My mouth's watering just thinking about.

Some other local eateries worth your while: Price's Chicken Coop (just south of uptown), Fuel Pizza (a block from The Penguin), Lupie's Cafe (east of uptown), Mama Ricotta's (midtown).

I could go on and on.

Oh and for desert, go to Krispy Kreme!
 
Be sure to try Showmars with various locations in Charlotte for their excellent service and great Pita Burgers. You order at the register and the food usually comes out 60 seconds after you sit down! I don't know how they do that. They have salads and other items as well. If you have Iced Tea be sure to tell them sweet or unsweet. Your glass will never be empty.

Pike's Soda Shop is another great place for old fashioned fun. There is also Fuel Pizza which was featured in the film Shallow Hal that was shot all over downtown Charlotte.

If you prefer the chains we have all of them here from fast food to upscale.

I will have my VHF/UHF tranceiver on for any Amateur Radio (Hams) who are coming to town. It's amazing how many jocks and former jocks who also have their Ham license. Not just the engineers anymore.

Charlotte is a wonderful city, but I fear NAB members are coming to a woefully dull and limited radio market, especially for one which will soon ranked #25.

I remember seeing something on the Food Network a few months back about a place in Charlotte that deep-fried chicken and then dragged it through Buffalo sauce, or something to that effect. Little drive-in sort of a joint. Looked extremely hazardous to my health...and incredibly delicious. Any locals know what I'm talking about?
 
That's probably Price's Chicken Coop you're talking about- AWESOME!
 
Bar-B-Q King is the one I saw on TV. Price's looks good, too. Better stop eating NOW to work up the appetite for all this fried chicken, I guess...thanks!
 
And don't forget to try some BBQ while ya'll are down here. For the best in the city, go to Mac's on South Blvd. You won't be disappointed. Rick Brown, the BBQ guru of America, says it's some of the best he's ever had.
 
Another really good BBQ joint is Carolina Country BBQ on Tyvola. Just keep on drivin right by Sonny's to some really good Q.

My favorite BBQ is at Hickory Log in Forest City... YUMMM

When I was enginerring for WAGY I always stopped there for lunch when I was in town.

Sorry, Gary. CCBBQ doesnt cut it. There's always a lot written about BBQ in the Carolinas, but everything I've had is dry and tasteless. Red Hot and Blue was the best when they were there. You are right about Prices. Holy crap! Best in the entire country. If I could, I would live there.

There were actually a couple of columns in this week's R&R about places to eat and drink in Charlotte for people coming in for the convention.

Yep that's the way I feel when I travel too. Gotta sample the local food. Also be sure to check out Lupie's on Monroe Road for great chili and burgers. it doesn't look like much on the outside but it's a whole different thing on the inside.
 
Hey Mike! Who knew you were a connoisseur, ham operator and a good jock to boot! You scored the hat trick! Figured I'd throw in a hockey metaphor with Sabres season right around the corner. I think all you guys conributed to an entire segment on eithe the Travel Channel or the Food Channel. Nice thread.
