NAB processing reports

If the new Vorsis AirAuria sound 1/10 as good as it looks it will go right to "12"

I saw it at a pre show get together. The VP-8 is now the VP-8 Plus and they have a new processor called the FM-4 which is $2500 list. The VP-8 stays at $2900 list.

Still has 31 bands... I wonder if it still makes every transient sound like LASERS?

Speaking of lasers - one other "feature" is that all those lights on the display will turn your rack room into "the best disco in town"...

PD's and GM's always loved the Texar prism's because of the light-show. The more lights, the louder the signal ;D!

If you get bored listening to your radio station, I think you can watch videos on its huge LCD screen. ;)

Kind Regards,

A high LRL count has always equated to a high feature count in the nontechnical mind. Remember, in the original manual for the Prism, Glen cautioned against changing the display driver from dot to bar because the power supply wasn't really up to it. This was 'corrected' in later revisions. I always found the dot easier to interpret.

Saw all the major players:

Vorsis: Effortless sounding, very musical and the new interface is great as it is more user friendly. The FM-4 is a legit option. I left the booth smiling.

Orban: 8600 as advertised. High end improved. 5500 sounded very good... the 5500 replaces both the 2300 and the 5300

Omnia: 11 limiters much improved over 6 and voice very clean. Improved bass enhancements. There are controls now that gang parameters in the limiters and then let you tweak it out from there. Layout will be very familiar to Omnia 6 users.

This is an exciting time for those looking at new processing!

Can anyone tell me if the new Omnia product has better overall AGC? My biggest problem with the O6 was it falling asleep on quiet passages, even with the 'make up gain' set all the way up. I know lots of people run an ariane in front to correct that problem... Let me know!!!
Also, any other thoughts on the 8600?

Thanks Mike

Hi, all!

The entire dynamics (as well as the clipper sections) were entirely overhauled to create the Omnia 11.

I designed the dynamics control (AGCs and Limiters) with the goal of dealing with this very issue you speak of ... Which I found existed to one degree or another in just about all digital processors to date, which compelled many folks to add outboard AGC devices to compensate.

The Omnia 11 needs no help with that!!!

The limiters are designed to give the ability to do deep levels of limiting without causing that fatiguing "constipated" bizzy sound. Frank's new clipper is nothing less than amazing.

What we're showing here at the show has ( at this version) a similar topology to the old Omnia6, but that's where the similarities end. I've even improved on our classic crossover design yielding further performance gains there!

Hope to see more of you tomorrow through Thursday at our booth! Looking forward to the feedback!

I did not notice any differences in the low end, but I never though this was a problem in the 8500. I think the more transparent highs and improved peak systems in the box speak for themselves. With roughly the same preset, you can A/B the 8500 and 8600 and the highs were more defined in the 8600.

Nick, I didn't know you were actually getting out there... Someday I'll have to make it out to the big show.

I hope you guys are all behaving well... Don't do anything Eliot Spitzer wouldn't do!

The word from direct from the demo by Corny Gould is that the Broadband AGC is "all new", thouigh I think that was true for the MB limiter and the clippers. He also said something to the effect that the Omnia 6 platform was pretty much maxed out. So about 3 years ago the began to look and ask what the weak points were, and then went about solving them in a no holds barred with regards to required DSP. He stated that everything including the crossover points was re-thought. The only thing that is really the same as the O6 is the number of bands.

There is a band coupling parameter that allows partial band coupling. This means that if the coupling band move beyond a certain number of DB the couple band then locks and does not go further, but unlocks again when the coupling band comes back.

I am somewhat at a loss for what I heard - "Rich", "full", "larger than life"? Finally, over lunch (the soup at NAB is excellent) of beef stew I decided that "hearty" might be the best word to describe it.

Don't miss an opportunity to hear any of these new products.
