NAB2008

A huge banner atop the Las Vegas Convention Center read: “Content Makes Cool Gadgets Hot”

To the National Association of Broadcasters’ credit, their annual convention is no longer about broadcasting.
105,259 came to Las Vegas from around the world to swap ideas about “new delivery, new content, new opportunities.”
And just in time.

The conference agenda presumes the obvious:
1. We are following – not leading – listeners to new platforms.
2. It’s all we can do to keep-up.
3. Our considerable, yet perishable, advantage is our engagement with existing cume, and with advertisers.

Notes to follow, @ www.HollandCooke.com and in Talkers magazine.
Here's an appetizer: http://nabshow.blogspot.com/2008/04/what-are-consultants-thinking-about-nab.html

Re: NOT a shameless client plug!

I have seen many of your videos.

I find your glibness both entertaining and incredibly annoying.

Our anonymous amigo describes what researchers call "ones and nines."
(And if you do-this-for-a-living, you know that nothing's worse than unengaged, impassive "fours and fives," eh?)

Every so often, someone will tell me "YOU should do a talk show!"
And it'd probably be fun...once in a while.
But I'd much rather coach, others, to be entertaining AND annoying.

Being merely one-or-the-other is not, mathematically, a business.
Evidence: Bill O'Reilly, twitching Glenn Beck, and the others on cable.
Or certainly El Rushbo.
They need BOTH believers AND those-who-think-they're-buffoons.
Fewer is less-than-an-audience.
If you don't believe me, ask Montel.

Gifted Neal Boortz, who's a pal, does something real smart:
He tells his screener, "if someone calls ALL P-O'd about what-I-just-said, move 'em to the head of the line."

So, "Thank you caller. One, eight hundred..."

I must admit (and I say this as a talk host), that there's a part of me that has never gotten the idea behind "creating a polarity."

Speaking for myself, when I hear someone on the air that I think is full of beans, I immediately switch stations and forget about it.

That being said, there is nothing less interesting to me than a talk show where everyone calls into suck up to the host.

BTW: I think Montel is a major buffoon; anyone who gives a platform to a disgusting pig like Sylvia Browne, loses me...

You must not like listening to El Rusbho ( dittos, man1 ) nor Hannity ("You're a great American, Hannity! Keep it up. Those liberals are evil. You're the only one that can protect us! Right on, bro!) :p

I've heard critics say certain hosts of the past never passed a mirror without looking at it...

Wonder what they think of these two?
