NABCO news & notes

Not reported on here but The Blitz has lost two on air people. Mo has left the morning show and Theo has exited mid-days. Also NABCO has filled to move the city of license of WMNI-AM to Westerville and WTDA to Worthington.

I don't understand either move. Worthington already has WRFD, so WTDA technically isn't Worthington's first radio station. Likewise, doesn't 107.9 have Westerville as their city of license?

I kind of liked the idea of Riverlea being their community of license. And what about Grandview Heights or Marble Cliff?

Just tryin to do whatever they can to get WTDA's App to move to the west side approved so they can cover more of Columbus... (Hopefully with a format other than rock or country)

Since they are not moving their transmitter site in Grove City, that is the only reason that makes any sense at all.

Why would they want to move WMNI's COL out of Columbus??

I've noticed that 1230 AM doesn't get out much past I-270 at night. Could they be moving and doing something else with the land where their tower sits?

Not sure what you mean, WMNI is not moving the transmitter just the COL (City of License) to westerville.

Im not sure what 1230 has to do with this

also by changing the COL of WTDA they are not taking away a signal from Westerville so no one can complain about that, and they are adding service to Worthington, that should also make it easier to upgrade the signal by moving to the western part of the city.

Sounds good on paper anyway.

Went to this FCC Blocked Audio Modifications list and see the WMNI COL change to Westerville is on hold as well as WMNI-FM tower move.

With the FCC's grant of the WMNI-FM tower location change, the FCC said the COL change of WMNI-AM from Columbus to Westerville was not necessary
so they did not grant it. So, the WMNI-AM COL, Columbus stays the same.

This did not make any sense to me when NABCO filed for the COL change for WMNI-AM two years ago. This is why the FCC dismissed the request as moot when granting the CP for WMNI-FM to
move it's tower site. This is what the FCC said about the WMNI-AM request to change it's COL.

Removal of Second Local Service Backfill. In the Rural 2d R&O, the Commission stated that it
strongly disfavors the removal of a second local transmission service to communities with populations
greater than 7,500.35 However, in this case a city of license backfill of WMNI(AM) is not required
to prevent removal of Westerville’s second local transmission service. WMNI-FM at Westerville is
presumptively treated as a station that serves the Columbus Urbanized Area, rather than providing a
second local service at Westerville, because Westerville is located within the Columbus Urbanized Area.
Under these circumstances, we find that the city of license backfill of WMNI(AM) to Westerville is
not required. We thus conclude that there is no public interest justification to support the city of li
license modification of WMNI(AM) to Westerville under Priority (4). Accordingly, and pursuant to NABC’s
request, we dismiss the Westerville Application as moot.36
Conclusion. We have evaluated the Worthington Application and find that it complies with all
pertinent statutory and regulatory requirements, and that grant would serve the public interest,
convenience, and necessity. Therefore, IT IS ORDERED that the application filed by NABC (File No.
BPH-20101004ACN) for a minor modification to the facilities of station WMNI-FM, changing its
community of license from Westerville, Ohio, to Worthington, Ohio, IS GRANTED.
IT IS FURTHER ORDERED, that the Westerville Application (File No. BP-20111222ANT)
proposing a minor modification to the facilities of station WMNI(AM), changing its community of
license from Columbus, Ohio, to Westerville, Ohio, IS DISMISSED AS MOOT.

Sincerely,
Peter H. Doyle

I'm told the WMNI-FM tower move has been put on hold, at least for now. Was expecting a better signal from WMNI-FM in downtown by now but it is still somewhat weak in some parts of downtown.

What.. They are really dumb if they don't build it out -- They do have till 2015 though.

Seems strange to slam on the brakes after all the machinations they went through to get the tower move approved.  This development, along with sticking with the near-zero rated news format makes me wonder if there is a sale in the offing.  Probably not, but you never know...

In one of the other postings, one poster said something about someone over at NABCO "cashing out". I wonder if a sale is imminent?

I assume that you're referring to the first post in this link. Wasn't quite sure how to interpret it:

Too late to modify... I should have said *maybe* you're referring to that post, not "I assume.." Others suggested the possibility of a sale as well.

I could see them selling.. anything is possible in today's climate... [Who would have ever thought CD101 would have sold their own signal a few years ago in trade for a not guaranteed LMA]..

I could see someone like Salem not minding picking up 99.7 and 103.9 ... even if they had to take on 920 to do so.

 The mere thought of that makes me cringe.  If any sale had to be to a company that already operates locally I would much rather see Saga get it than anyone else.  Hopefully Salem is already disappointed with Columbus and wants to exit.

Saga would be right up there with Clear Channel owning 7 radio stations if they bought the Nabco cluster. They would probably sell 107.9 and 104.3 to get them since 99.7 and 103.9 has better coverage in town than those 2. EMF would probably be a potential buyer so they could get Air1 off the 43 watt translator and bring K love to Columbus. Then again Saga could buy Nabco and sell 104.3 and 107.9 to EMF.
