Nader Scolds Rush Limbaugh over Back Rent

Can I ask a question?

"The public interest" gets bantered about alot on these boards. Can you explain why a station with Rush AND news even if it is all national is not serving the public good but a station playing Country 24/7 is?

Although there are those who'd argue that said country station is *not* serving the public interest if it's totally piped-in, non-local programming....

That is not what I am referring to... My question is how does a 24/7 country/CHR/urban/sports station serve the "public interest" more than a News Talk station?

Entertainment is as much in the public interest as information. And with more than 14000 radio stations there are more than enough frequencies to do both.

That doesn't really answer my question...if the argument is "public interest" how does a 24/7 country/CHR/urban/sports station serve the "public interest" more than a News Talk station?

Yes I being repetitive on purpose.

Dale, you're about 80 years late to this particular party. Back in '27 (and again in '34) the feds did indeed proclaim the obligation of licensees to operate in the "public interest, convenience & necessity"--a phrase borrowed from utility law--and we've all been arguing about our differing interpretations ever since. Just google the phrase "public interest, convenience & necessity" and you'll find enough reading material to keep you busy for the next few decades.

Suffice it to say that the FCC long ago determined that 24/7 country/CHR/urban/sports... classical/polka/Chinese gongs/want-ads/infommercials/AC/rock/you-name-your-choice-of-content on the radio all qualifies.

Good luck trying to change their minds.

"The public interest" are you kidding me. Commercial radio first serves the interest of owners and stock holders.
Providing some local news/weather/traffic and public affairs programs & entertainment serves that need.
Rush is an entertainer. He serves himself, the republican party and stations who broadcast his content.

Commercial radio is for profit and serving the public is a myth. It's like Santa Claus. Nobody ever says how do we better serve the public. The questions are always related to ratings and money.
