Name Dropping Wanna-Be's

That's where I see it the most, board ops who try to parlay that "connection" into something. I'd hate to see how that girl's resume reads! Can't blame 'em for trying, I guess, but you can bet that, in many cases, that "connection" doesn't even know that board op's name, and might even be upset about being used that way.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Just found out from a co-worker of hers that she's a PHONE SCREENER for Kraddick. That's even a couple of notches below board op, right?

Phone screener? Mike, you slay me! haha

But hey, she's the "best female DJ in DFW!"

Just sayin'.

What's the problem here? She needs the bread. So what if she uses her connection to the station to get some work. Don't we all do that?

Traffic reporter... not exactly much to brag about either.

Or how about cynical, disgruntled, jealous, miserable wanna-be radio folks who like to trash talk someone they don't even know just for using her position/job to her advantage and maybe picking up a few extra DJ gigs on the side of her low-paying radio job?

Yeah... I think those guys come across as bigger morons than a part time radio employee trying to promote herself and make some extra cash DJing around town. Looks to me like she's pretty smart to toss a couple names around and associate herself with professionals.

Who knows... maybe she'll get some fantastic response and decide she doesn't need the board-op/phone screener position anymore. Then there would be an opening for a few of the old guys who couldn't hang full time in the radio world. Might want to bookmark that Craigslist ad, Scotty.

Wow! You don't know Mike Shannon if you think all he is is a "traffic reporter". You might want to do some research before you take a "shot" like that!

Well in all fairness, Mike taking shots at this girl's resume in a thread about "name dropping wanna-be's" is kind of hypocritical considering he himself has a slew of 'celebrity encounter' pictures on his web page. And that's not a shot coming from me to Mike... just pointing out the hypocritical aspect of this entire thread.

Talking trash about a young girl with a 'low-on-the-radio-totem-pole' job who is trying to find other ways to get her name out there and make extra cash is pretty pathetic if you ask me. I've been in radio for 19 years (18 in major markets)... on-air, production, imaging. promotions... the whole sha-bang aside from sales... and I may not have survived all that time if I hadn't found ways (including the avenue she is taking) to make extra money and support myself. I commend this girl for sticking with what she loves and I don't fault her at all for trying to get DJ gigs and letting people know that she is surrounded by other professionals in the entertainment industry.

Thanks for the support as always, Jay!

The point is, the Craigslist ad is misleading. "Best Female DJ in town"? "I work part time for Kidd Kraddick in the morning and also for Radio Disney"? Am I the only one who thinks this is a gross inflation of one's resume? I know for certain that she's not on the air at Radio Disney, and know that she's a phone screener for Kraddick. How that might qualify her as the "best"...well, that's pretty subjective.

I did say, "Can't blame 'em for trying." How this warrants a personal attack, I don't know. I thought I was just pointing out the obvious.

I'm perfectly happy being a traffic reporter. I know that concept escapes some folks, but it's been a rock-solid job for over five years now, it's not ratings-sensitive, and really, I don't expect to pursue much more in this industry. I've had two separate waves of radio experience in my life, and neither one did a great job of paying the bills. Honestly, it keeps me from having to go get a REAL job! And I still do the "Hi-Fi Club" for fun AND for free. I realize that's another concept that escapes people, but that's just me, and it works just fine for me. BTW, most radio folks have learned by now that you should only do a radio job part-time, and NEVER bank your future on it...and by God, do it for FUN. If some $$$ trickles down your way from it, treat it as found money.

Anyway, gotta run...Chuck Norris just called; he and Erik Estrada want me to join them for lunch today. Mel Renfro and Della Reese might stop by, too.

Actually, I'm kinda honored that you'd waste your very first post on Radio-Info on li'l ol' me!! :)

I took her reference to 'best female DJ in town' not as radio air talent, but as an actual DJ who plays music at parties and events... and she also referenced that she works in the radio industry and has a good grasp on the entertainment world. Seemed pretty self explanatory to me. And I see nothing wrong with touting yourself as 'the best' when you are promoting yourself. I think if you go and look at a lot of the wedding DJ and party DJ websites, there probably aren't many that say "We have the most mediocre and average DJs for your party needs".

...and here's another "honor" of a first post based on little ol' you.

Show me a Craigslist ad that ISN'T misleading or at least inflated. Of course she's going to put "Best Female DJ in town", if she's looking for a gig.
Would you hire someone who wrote "Lousy DJ, mediocre at best, just a phone screener"?
Of course you wouldn't.

The girl is obviously trying to pick up some extra money like anyone else would.

No need to slam her for "gross inflation of one's resume". Maybe, her opinion ( and it might be her own ) is that she is in her eyes. Let her clients or potential clients decide for themselves before you break out the big cartoon hammer on her noggin for trying.

Kelly, if you read these boards, please don't let these people get you down. I hope you're able to find something from your ad.

I don't know who she is, but I've got a different take on this after reading the Craigslist ad.

The major reason in using the "Best Female DJ in Town" title has to simply be for grabbing attention. I'm sure it reflects on what she believes her ability is, and also quite possibly: shows her self-confidence. Notice she didn't mention it anywhere else.

It's just the same as two news/talk stations in the same city saying that they are #1. In what? According to who?

I don't think it's really a big deal. Good luck, Kelly!

Off subject, but did I hear that Bill Gardner's back on the air in Phoenix now? We sure miss him here. Anybody know whatever happened to his brother Andre Gardner from KEGL many moons ago?

Actually, Bill Gardner is on the air on a new radio station in Las Vegas, AM 670 KMZQ, and it is also on 99.3 FM, Payson, AZ. The actual studio is located on the Las Vegas Strip.

I'm in Northwest Phoenix/Glendale and I can't get it. We have a 99.3 station here in the Valley. I don't know if the people in the Northeast part, or up in Fountain Hills, AZ can kind of receive it. It doesn't stop many of us who have listened to Bill in the mornings for so many years (9 years at KOOL), and many of us are streaming online at 993theq.com.

The station is so new, it's currently commercial-free, they're experimenting around with it, and he's so far the only on-air personality there. It has great potential when it goes to FM.

Andre Gardner does afternoons at classic rocker WMGK in Philadelphia (one of the best classic rock stations I've ever heard). He also does a Sunday morning "Breakfast With The Beatles" show that can be heard on WMGK, KSLX Phoenix, and KFOX in California.

The biggest problem I have with her ad is saying "part time with Kidd Kraddick" This makes it sound like she's only there once and awhile. I would have preferred she said "I work alongside Kidd Kraddick" If you're going to stretch the truth slightly, don't half-arse it and ultimately sell yourself short.

edit...no mention of her anywhere on Kraddick's website ???

I appreciate your input, 5515.

I thought it disingenuous, that's all.

There's nothing wrong with promoting oneself but not at the expense of truth.

Does Kidd know she's promoting herself with his name? I ask because Mike brought up an excellent point.

Moreover, if this lady is so #1, why is she on Craigslist?

Those were just a few of my observations.

This is amusing. Even at its highest level of achievement, radio talent is one rung below rodeo clown on the entertainment ladder. What's the big deal? You guys crack me up!

Bill Gardner will ALWAYS be tops in my book, if just for his work at KVIL.

"radio talent is one rung below rodeo clown on the entertainment ladder"

HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I'm guessing most rodeo clowns are insulted by that remark.

But at least we radio folks don't play rodeo-poker!

FOFLOL!!!

I'm proud to say - I supplement my afternoon drive/programming KEOM income with full time Wedding/Corporate & Private Party DJ work! And also represent Sandi Sharp from KLUV - who I would argue is the best female mobile DJ in Dallas! :)

If anyone has figured out how to make a full time, life-long living at radio - please share your secret! (I make 3x in mobile DJ work what I make at KEOM!) - granted, it's KEOM, so it's not top dollar, but still... You HAVE to do SOMETHING.

And my website (www.dfwpartytunes.com) clearly uses KEOM & KLUV both. Why not? You should hear how excited people get when I tell them Sandi Sharp is coming to do their party!

So I say - GO GIRL! MAKE THAT $$ - DROP KIDD'S NAME - AND ANYONE ELSES YOU CAN. - But you really should get your own website, and not use craigslist. :)
