Name from the Past: Dick Hungate

From the Virginia board, Dick Hungate has been let go from middays on a Richmond classic rocker after 23 years. No personal issues, they just decided to voicetrack his midday shift instead. Old timers will remember he was one of the early jocks at progressive rock WMMR and later WYSP in 1980.

Will the day come that rock stations here VT middays or are we too big a market for that? Does the average listener care that the jock is live & local anymore?

apparently so, that must be why DOn & Mike aren't on WYSP anymore and perhaps that is why WYSP is using live people as opposed to out of town shows

I think it's more that their talk show didn't work here. Moreover, comparing hot talk to music is apples and oranges to an extent. Overall, listeners want the content they find most appealing, whether it's a syndicated host, voice tracked or a glorified jukebox. If you're a classic rock fan for example, would you stop listening if the station started voice tracking? (Thinking like an average listener, not those of us who inhabit these boards.) Odds are few people would notice except when the name has legacy value (like Pierre here), and even then, if you're a music listener, that outweighs who talks for a few seconds between songs.
