What one song gets airplay on more formats than any other? Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, Billy Joel all come to mind.

Excellent question, but hard to answer. This much I got from Mediabase: Looking at ALL the stations they monitor in ALL formats (1292 stations), the most played song year-to-date in 2006 is Mary J. Blige "Be Without You", with 404,537 spins from January 1 - August 15, 2006.

To put that into perspective, the combined number of plays for ALL SONGS by the artists you mentioned year-to-date is this:

Eagles: 214,778
Fletwood Mac: 140,874
Billy Joel: 79,555

Again, that includes all of the songs combined for these artists. The Beatles didn't even make the top 1000 on Mediabase!

Tequila Sunrise or Desparado played on Q105, Dove, Point, Magic?, Bone?, QYK, maybe?

One thing that skews Mediabase is probably an uneven number of stations by format. Also remember that the CHR stations have a very high rotation rate so those songs have an advantage. But back to the question...

As far as an artist that gets more play on more stations than any other, it would probably be Mariah Carey. She clears all current CHRs, Rhymics, Urbans, Urban ACs, Dance, and Hot ACs. Her older stuff gets played on AC, Soft AC, and some Variety Hits stations. I bet you can hear Mariah on 93.3, 94.1, 94.9, 95.7, 98.7, 100.7, 105.5, and maybe 101.5 as they dip into early 90's up tempo hits. That's a total of 7 if not 8 FM Tampa Bay radio stations. And if you wanna count the WTMP simulcast, that would add another.

As far as an actual song that gets played on more stations than any other.... I'd lean towards something by Boston or bands like Styx, Loverboy, REO Speedwagon, or the Cars. It's gotta be hard enough for 102.5 yet a big enough hit from the 80's for a station like Mix 100.7. "Don't Look Back" or "More Than A Feeling" would fly on 100.7, 101.5, 102.5, 104.7, and 107.3. That's a total of 5.

Actually that makes sense considering that the number of oldies stations is dwindling. And I can't remember the last time I heard a Beatles song on a classic rock station.

Here comes the Sun may get multiple formats. And yes, More Than A Feeling huge multi format song. There must be one song that will get country, Classic rock, oldies, Easy Listening. Remeber years ago Ray Charles getting country, top 40, Easy Listening and R&B play with Georgia on My Mind abd I can't stop Loving you

Okay so does mary J. Blige get cash money or all of those "spins"..Do they still do BMI logs? jeesh that seems like an awful lot.

Franks question was "of all time" right? A study of plays would probably show that "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" by Gene Autry would hold the most plays. That song comes back every year and gets slammed into the wall for four weeks a year or longer (more time than many "hits" last these days) and it was recorded in the 40's..so 60 years, times four weeks times the number of stations that play it regardless of format..adds up..

Back to you frank...
