Name universites that own more than 1 radio station

besides USC and CSU Sacramento

USC owns KDFC San Francisco, KUSC and KXSC both in LA with a string of translators all over CA

http://kxsc.org/

CSU Sacramento KXPR 88.9 and KXJZ 90.5

How common is it all around the country.

The points are doubled, and the top 5 answers are on the board! Let's play the Feud!!!!!

Name universites that own more than 1 radio station!

...they're all over Wisconsin like cow turds. The University of Wisconsin system itself owns WHA, WERN, W215AQ, WSUM and WHHI in the Madison market, WHLA and WLSU in La Crosse, WHID and WPNE in Green Bay and WHSA and KUWS in the Duluth-Superior market, among others...

Here in NE Ohio, Kent State University owns flagship WKSU/89.7 Kent, and:

89.1 WKSV Thompson
89.3 WKRW Wooster
90.7 WNRK Norwalk
91.5 WKRJ New Philadelphia
95.7 W239AZ Ashland
107.5 W298BA Boardman

From their coverage map:

http://www.wksu.org/about/coverage/

Down in Columbus, WOSU has stations all over Central Ohio, including NPR News outlet WOSU-FM/89.7 (and for now, WOSU/820) and "Classical 101" WOSA/101.1 in the Columbus market, and simulcasters in places like Marion, Mansfield, Coshocton and Zanesville...

Just head up North to Redding or Eureka and you'll find Oregon Stated Board of Higher Education owing Jefferson Public Radio which is part of Southern Oregon University, and KWAX Classical 91.1 from University of Oregon.

In Washington State, Washington State University owns Northwest Public Radio, serving Western Central Washington to Eastern Washington. KUOW 94.9 owns by University of Washington has repeaters from Olympia to the Canadian border.

In Arizona, KJZZ and KBOQ owned by Maricopia Community College has several stations across the state of Arizona.

WERN and (almost all of) the WH-- FM stations are *not* owned by the University. They belong to the Educational Communications Board, a separate state agency.

The University does own two stations in Madison -- WHA and WSUM. To my recollection, the only other place where the University owns two or more stations with overlapping coverage is Neenah, where Green Bay's WHID and Oshkosh's WRST overlap.

As you cite, they also control a number of other stations around the state, including but not limited to WLSU, WHID, and KUWS.

Indiana's Ball State University (Muncie) owns WBST, Muncie; WBSB, Anderson; WBSW, Marion; WBSJ, Portland (IN) and WBSH, Hagerstown-New Castle. All five use the brand "Indiana Public Radio."

CSU owns more than those two but most simply simulcasts those two like KUOP-91.3 Stockton & KXSR-91.7 Groveland as well as others.

...hmmm. Then when did the ECB get split off from the University system?...

They never were part of the University system. The Legislature created a State Radio Council in 1945 which was responsible for the FM stations. (the situation with WERN -- then known as WHA-FM -- is a bit unclear -- as to my knowledge FCC rules at the time would not have allowed the WHA-FM call letters to be used on a station that wasn't licensed to the University.) WLBL, the AM station in (at the time) Stevens Point, was originally built by the Department of Markets. (later Department of Agriculture) (Missouri operated a similar station, WOS, in Jefferson City)

WLBL and WHA were co-owned for a few months in 1938,* until Gov. La Follette got "un-re-elected" and his executive order merging the stations was overturned.

Now, the operation of the ECB stations and WHA/WERN/WHA-TV have always been tightly integrated. But the ownership is different.

* which I suppose makes Wisconsin the only, or at least the first, University to own more than one *AM* radio station...

University of Florida....They have a commercial AM/FM Combo (WRUF-AM/FM), and an NPR affiliate (WUFT), in addition to the PBS affiliate and an LPTV.

Until recently, students were allowed 'hands on' (on air) at all three, but you know, egos got in the way.

As mentioned, The University of Washington has repeaters all around Western Washington for KUOW. They also own alternative KEXP Seattle, KUOW-AM Tumwater, WA and something called "KUOW2" on KXOT Tacoma.

Pacific Lutheran University owns KPLU Tacoma and a bunch of Western Washington translators and repeaters (KVIX Port Angeles, KPLI Olympia, KPYU Sedro-Woolley)

Northwest Public Radio, out of Washington State University in Pullman, WA run a formal 2 network chain of stations throughout Washington and parts of Oregon and Idaho. They also own student run KZUU in Pullman.

Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, WA owns KSVR Mount Vernon, WA and KSVU Hamilton, WA

Green River Community College in Auburn, WA owns KGRG AM/FM.

Since Washington State University and University of Washington is owned by Washington State Government. Should they merge KUOW and NWPR into one corporation?

Why would you suggest that? Should there only be one of everything? The University of Washington is different from Washington State University. They have different emphases, and are hundred of miles apart. Likewise with their radio outlets, whose only overlap is in a few markets (most recently in Tacoma, but that's an LMA with two different community colleges).

Which state university did you attend, dawg?
