Names from all over New Jersey

John & Ken...whe ever thought they'd be so successful? Which reminds me, what about Dude & Dudess? Neil, I'm glad to see you survived what Dan Rather calls "the contraction of resources" at KY.

Wait a second, KC2LDY, (I'd call you K for short, but I'm the K) are you saying that this Lee Greenwood guy (a different guy than the "God Bless the USA"-singing friend of Sean Hannity?) worked at an elevator-music station for 30 years (!!!), and then became a rock jock when the station switched formats? Could that be true?

If it is true, then that is amazing on a number of counts. First, can anybody think of any other jock who survived such a drastic station format switch and successfully performed in both formats? Secondly, are there any other NJ radio personalities who have been at the same station for more than 30 years consecutively? Thirdly, does anybody call Uncle Leo during his shift at the RAT and request Mantovani? I hope not....because I'm gonna do that :D

And, to keep things going, a few more names from the NJ radio roster: Ed Klein - John Mathieu - Lori Savitch (Jessica's sister)

Wow..Ed Klein. Heck of a nice guy..what a voice. Moved on to Philly after WHWH.

Where did John Mathieu land?

Now about John & Ken. As I may have stated in a previous posting SOMEwhere on this board (I've written so many tomes, it's hard to keep track) I didn't initially think they would be good for 101.5. Their audition tape was frankly very dirty in the deptiction of a repulsive act. However. I heard them ON the air at WMGM one morning and they were into busting the hump of some principal of a local High School for not letting the boys were shorts but the girls could. So they eventually got him on and put him through the ringer. I went to the station that day and told the GM and consultant..NOW I'm a believer. THEY had all wanted them; I had resisted. I changed my mind and the rest is history.

I was invited by the Program Director of KFI about two months ago to contribute a recorded piece for a ROAST that KFI was doing for their 20th anniversary as a team. (Their pairing is a story unto itself.) John Kobylt wrote to me to THANK me for saying what I said about them. I was in a unique position as having them work for ME and then they went to LA directly. DIdn't stop in Des Moines, or even CHicago.. They went directly to LA. They've been either close or #1 for SO many years in their daypart. Ken hasn't said a word to me since he left 101.5...but John and I keep in touch a lot...I get Xmas cards with notes about their 3 lovely kids, etc.. So at least ONE of them keeps in touch. I can't possibly claim credit for them making it to LA and staying successful for over 15 years there..but if I had even a SMALL part in helping them prepare for the gig there, I'm happy. I'm not one of those guys who gets PO'd when the stars leave (Thanks Johnny Morris).. I actually was excited for them. We did just fine after they left..(it takes a little time to invest in new teams or talent..sometimes it takes a couple of years to get the train back on the track when BIG talent leave...I only wish KLIF had given me and Hilarie the time it takes..oafs). Speaking of which, no one has mentioned HER in our postings..or Brooke and Roberta...together or seperately. Whatever anyone thinks of Roberta (it's either love or hate) she's quite a character and very talented. Same for Brooke. Deminski & Doyle did ok in Detroit..leaving after a contract dispute only recently.

Back to back in the day, day. I didn't know Jessica Savitch's sister was in the biz..fill me in Harry. I don't remember! Was it AFTER I left for NY?

Lee Greenwood's case is rare. He's a nice guy..I finally met him a couple of years ago at a company function.

I didn't get to call EZ ED Johnson up in Vermont..I'll get around to it.

Notice that LISTENERS are not chiming in with comments here? It's just the folks who've BEEN on the air. Perhaps they don't remember ANY of the people we're mentioning. I don't know..that is why I asked if THIS is the type of thread some readers want. Otherwise we'll go back to asking things like:

"Who do you think is the best weekend voice-tracker on AM stations in Salem County during leap years?"

Or: "Did anyone pick up 97.5 on troppo last night from Sheboygan?"

Or: "Does Big Jay have ANYthing else to do?"

Now that's real interesting.

BE BIG
Fred Macy

Jay: Please say hi to Ed Johnson for me. He did middays at WOND when I was PD.

I don't think listeners know about this board ... in fact, I don't know how people in the biz
find out about it really. Personally, I never really listened to stations other than where I
worked very much, and was always pretty loyal as a kid to WIBG, where I was a "prize pig"
(I hated WFIL) I didn't hear a whole lot of classic radio ... just WABC, WOR-FM, and WHLW
and WMID in the early years. Oh and the only talk station was WNBC ... I only remember Lee Leonard.

Harry: Where is Lori Savitch ? She did news for us at WOND.

I did both Top 40 at WIFI-92 and elevator music at EAZY 101 every Saturday and Sunday
for a couple of years. I had an hour between shifts, IHop on Saturday and Roy Rogers on
Sunday. I did WIFI Saturday 6 to 10 AM and EAZY 11 AM to 5 PM ... Sunday ...
EAZY 11 AM to 5 PM and WIFI 6 PM to Midnight. I used a different name on EAZY.
They were fun times, and I made a lot of cash.
I had full time offers at both, but Howard Green kept meeting the Philly money so
I stayed at WOND/WMGM. One of the offers at EAZY 101 was "do afternoons and
be Chief Engineer" afternoons meant 4 to 11 Mon - Friday (35 hours a week on the air)
which left 5 hours for engineering. hah

John & Ken...whe ever thought they'd be so successful? Which reminds me, what about Dude & Dudess?

I saw Steven Ross, (aka, dude at WUSS) at a Broadcast Pioneers luncheon last month. He does the ‘remember when’ trivia show on 1210/WPHT Saturday nights 10-12mid. Incidentally, before WUSS I hired Steven to work for me at WKXW FM doing weekends, for a few weeks. Steven is a gifted broadcaster, with a well-oiled ego, that does not believe in following formats. Call him on his show. He takes calls. Ask him a personal trivia question. What ever happened to Dudess, and what was her real name. And what does he really think about program directors. And don’t hold back.

Well, this is one listener that is quite interested in this subject, though I may not be the average listener, as I had interest in getting into radio when I was younger.

Anyway, I remember so many of the names that have been mentioned here. The names that Jay dropped from the early days at OBM FM are ones I had forgotten, but these were some of the first people I really listened to on the radio when I got my first radio in the 8th grade. (Guess that makes me quite a geek when you think about it, that I was listening to WOBM when I was 13 back in 1970. I really thought "Shrimp Boats are a Comin' " was a new song. Go figure!)

Maybe Jay would know this. I remember seeing a Gary Cubberly on the Discovery Channel on some science show years back. Was that the same guy? I had seen him doing a live broadcast from the window of Britt's Department Store in Brick Town (anybody even remember that store?) way back when, but I couldn't say I remember the face well enough. Sorry to hear he passed away.

I used to be glued to 11-7 back in the day, especially during the spring and summer of 1974. I thought it was so cool that there was such a hip station right in our own back yard, that came in so strong (at least where I lived in Brick, it also was great that it let the batteries in my radio last longer because of it). I'm not sure that many of my peers were listening, but I will say this, that one day in school, somehow the subject of 11-7 came up, and one of the girls in the class made the comment, "Jay the Jock is so cute". So you did have your fans, even back then Jay.

Which reminds me of another name from the early WJRZ days, and that was Lance DeBock. I though he was pretty good, and my sisters and her friends used to thing that he was cute in that day. Does he still do radio at all? I sometimes see a truck around where I work for "Lance DeBock Landscaping". Is it the same guy?

How about Brent Mc Nally? I still remember his voice from the first days of JRZ. Lets see if I can remember many of those names. Jay Lorrie, Terry Burns, he even had a jingle with his name, which was a big deal I thought. I remember when JRZ had a newsroom (or booth) in the Ocean County Mall. I remember seeing a news guy there, a big guy, Frank Mc Crone or something like that. I'll try to remember more and write again.

But yes, there is at least one listner who has interest in this. This dialogue is one of my favorite sources of entertainment. Please don't stop. Thanks.

How about STEVE KAMER? He did some work at PST..and now HE'S the voice of the YES Network and does the intro to INSIDE EDITION and many other voiceover spots on TV..and was the voice of WCBS-AM for a while. I think he still does some promos for them. Went out to lunch with him a couple years ago..he's WEALTHY from his work.

I gave Steve Kamer his first job on WKXW FM. I remember one afternoon, his father walked him in the station and asked if I would give his 16-year-old son a job. Steve was still wearing his Bordentown high school clothes, as he just got out of class. I asked Steve about his qualifications, and if he could recite the EBS test. And he did. Complete with the old interval pause. So I gave him a shot at a weekend slot. Steve was the only one to jump ship from WKXW to WPST. He did so one day, when he called me up said I had to match WPST's offer. It was for $5.00/hr. I was only paying him $3.50/hr, as that was minimum wage at the time, and more than enough for a high school kid in training. I told him, Steve, if you can command that kind of money, take it. And so he did. He was Tom Taylor’s headache after that.

Greg Kozier, Raine Novak, Dan Collins, John Lockwood, Mike Moran from the mid-80s WJRZ days... Ralph Hahn did news. I think Ralph is at WOBM-FM, Lockwood works for part-time for Access.1, Mike teaches in PA.

Jack Moore, Sal Emma, Joe Satta from Lite 106.3 WSLT...

Greg Kozier, Raine Novak, Charlie Magill, Dan Collins, John Lockwood, Mike Moran from the mid-80s WJRZ days... Ralph Hahn did news. Charlie passed away several years ago, I think Ralph is at WOBM-FM, Lockwood works for part-time for Access.1, Mike teaches in PA.

Jack Moore, Sal Emma, Joe Satta from Lite 106.3 WSLT...

I'd like to respond to the last 5 posts, as I have either questions or comments about them all. Indulge me on this one..

To Tom McNally.. I'm honored that you listened to WHLW back in the day..was it the original staff from '70-72 or when I got there from '72-'76?
Ez Ed was NOT on the air last night..either on vacation or took the day off..so I'll call him another night. But he's on that station website so he's there. Been there for 10 years. That's a record these days.
Also Tom.. When were you on WIFI-92? I was only there one summer--'80..Liz Kiley hired me at WIFI (the ONLY female jock EVER on Musicradio 77 WABC.) But BIGBY was the station manager..so his love affair with my work started then. Then he fired me at WPHT 17 years later...saying I was a better jock than a talker and left Hilarie on her own for a few months. That was scary. I can't believe the money was better in AC than in Philly! But nothing suprises me about this biz anymore...even back then.

To Sam's first post...

Sounds like you really LIKE this Ross dude. Some guys just CAN'T bring themselves to follow ANY PD's formats. I just fired them usually, after giving them all the rope to hang themselves with.

To Tim Chadwick:

Are you related to the Chadwicks from LAKEWOOD?
Next...thanks for such kind words about listening way back in the day. I'm glad I brought up names you remember being such a young man. Yes I was cute, wasn't I? It was the hair. And my long eyelashes. Anyway..I learned a lot from KOZIAR who was the guy on at night at the time. HE really taught me how to run the board and gave me my first indication that I COULD do it. I really DID see him in Shop-Rite the other day..while I was talking with a childhood friend I bumped into in Toms River. Small world.

The music we played on WOBM-FM was sappy to say the least. It was what the OWNERS liked. Simply THEIR tastes. So I'd find EVERY hit song done by ANYONE to play to make it sound almost hip. Yeah...Percy Faith doing Blind Faith. Bing Crosby doing Hey Jude..(I ended the show with that back-timed to the news.) No one EVER realized it. Every jock had a song they went off the air with. Koziar played "WAVE" everynight by Antonio Carlos Jobim I think. Why I remember that crap is beyond me.

Yes..it WAS that Gary Cubberly on TV. He died suddenly if I recall. Guy was very UP for an MOR station..

Lance DeBock. Yeah..that's him. HE had the right idea. Plant shrubs.

Brent McNally. He had some peculiar habits. It was HE and Joe Knox whose family owned the station that I gave the idea to name it WJRZ. It happened at KMART in Toms River in '75 in the record department. Not kidding.

Don't MENTION the name Jay Lorrie to me. He was a $&%#&@# who didn't include me on station promos...because I threw him OUT of WHLW when it was almost purchased by Jim Rodio from way South Jersey. The purchase didn't go through..but Lorrie had come up to WHLW when the station was for sale saying junk like, "This station sucks..and when I'm the PD you'll all be out of here because you all are not professional"...real nice. So I threw him out of the station...physically. I remember the day vividly. So when he was hired as the morning guy, and I was hired as afternoons at JRZ in '76, I figured I'd just do my job and ignore him. Well..he tweaked me by not including me in the promos..like I wasn't THERE..
And management...Brent and Joe took HIS SIDE for some unGodly reason. So I went on my honeymoon in August..and they fired me when I got back. Then I told them they were WRONG to do that...so they taped all of the records that I let them USE for 3 months..and they fired me AGAIN...saying I violated FCC rules. HUH? Whatever. I went to WPST from there and my career started to take off. Terry Burns was a nice guy. I've lost track of him.
I was gone by the time they did shows from the mall. I talked to Kevin WIlliams a lot at the mall. I thought he liked me..but when I took over the PD job at OBM-AM & FM in '81, I was on the wrong team. As if I came from another planet.. Uranus. We speak NOW, but it's just cordial for some reason. I just don't know. Well..I do, but that's for the book.

So Tim, it was kinda fab to hear that LISTENERS like the conversations we're having here. You MAY be in the minority..we don't know..but look at the HITS on certain posts and you'll see which ones have legs. One of my threads is way over 13,000 now, so I guess there must be interest by SOMEone other than just radio guys and gals.

Back to Sam part 2:

Kamer..he's something. The biggest voice I ever heard coming out of a kid's mouth. But he as SO annoying back then..but ya just KNEW he was gonna do SOMETHING big. And he DID. He's not so annoying now that he makes over a Million a year doing voice work out of his home and occasional jaunts to NYC. So I'd say he did ok. I DO think that he used to HANG around ME before he got the job at your version of KICKS, while I was a PST...but let's not get into a pissing match over who saw him first. Kicks couldn't keep him. Nor could we at PST. He was meant for bigger things...like the rest of us. I'll call you on SUNDAY Sam.

To RadioguyNJ:

Ralph hasn't been at OBM for over a couple of years now. He works for Ocean County now. He did some fill-in news for ME on JRZ after Diane couldn't deal with me, and we hired Anita who COULD. I like them both, but Dianne didn't realize that we had started to click. She did what SHE thought was the right thing for her. She's doing ok at The Breeze with Mike Fitzgerald. Mazel Tov Dianne.

I didn' work in the area in the mid-80's so some of the JRZ names escape me.. And I couldn't pick up SLT up here at the REAL shore.

Phew.. I can't deal with this anymoe (now I sound like Levy). Know this, I'm outa here.

BE BIG

Anybody know the whereabouts of Tim Downs of WHLW, WOBM-FM, AND WJLK-FM fame?

FYI, Melissa Morris was on the air...as the reporter for the Pet Patrol 2 or 3 times daily. If there was one thing small-market radio did that big-market radio could never do, it was to reunite people with their lost pets. Could there be a higher calling in life? See if you can accomplish somthing humane like that, Rush Limbaugh, Howard Stern and the rest of you. Excuse me, I'm choking up and getting all teary-eyed. Actually, now I'm all verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic. Lee Greenwood is neither green nor wood.

But, getting back to Missy Morris, I gained a lot of respect for her when she left a cushy job working for Daddy to enlist in the army. If I remember correctly, she was a pretty decent looking gal, too, and (from the TMZ/Page 6 portion of this thread) she dated both Denny Mele and Bob "Sports" Rumbold (at different times, of course) for short periods. I don't know why or how I remember that but I think I have a fondness for gossip. Which reminds me...how come the "Insider" TV show dishes on everybody in show business but has absolutely nothing at all to say - not even a word - about its own dissolute Pat O'Brien. Even the esteemed quack Dr. Phil won't make a comment.

I suggest someone who is now on the radio should call the Insider Exec Producer and get them on the air to discuss this. This could be real engaging radio. I suggest Dennis and Judy or Preston and Steve or Joey do this. It would make a great segment.

Plus, as usual, a few more names from the South Jersey radio dustbin: Howard Berger (who was Chuck Kramer's father-in-law for a while) Hugh Scott, Bob Fry and John Runfolo.

Jay -

WHLW and WMID were the only Top 40 type stations you could pick up down here back in the day. I don't remember any names ... but I think we listened (my friends and I) right when they came on the air and had a good signal down this way.

I started at WIFI-92 in about September 1980 and worked there on the air and as Assistant Chief until they changed to I-92, Rock of the 80's ... I was going to leave, as it became very boring - we talked less and less and played more sweepers and jingles. I used to let a friend run the board while I slept on the couch, and he'd wake me up when it was time to talk once or twice an hour. I wound up staying to help them out until I-92 was ready to go. Anyway - when I came up to talk to hem about the engineering thing, Big Tom Bigbee asked me to bring a tape .... I handed him the tape when he introduced me to Bill Rinier the Chief Engineer, and 10 minutes later I had an airshift and engineering gig. Liz Kiley was the PD in name only, Bigby was OM but called the shots, and he was also on the air 10 to 2 or something. Liz Kiley was dating Jim O'Brien for awhile, he would show up at 7 to take her out to dinner all the time. John Tenaglia was the GM for GCC - General Cinema. Within a few months I got a similar offer from EAZY 101, help finish up the new studios and do some airshifts. So I was still PD/CE/Mornings on WMGM, working 4 days at EAZY and 5 days a WIFI. Long days ... nice money.

I also had my run-ins with Jay Laurie (the late Joe Vivian) they hired him for mornings on WOND when I was doing 6 to 9 PM (then running the board for Pinky 9 to 12) We used to call him Jay Lardo ... I think I called him that on the air one time and he wanted to kill me or something. 20 years later I warned Jim Rodio about hiring him, and he did anyway, then agreed with me later. Lardo did calm down in his later years, but still did some prankish things. I have a reel on tape in a box in the attic that says LARDO on it, I gotta see what that was. Probably oink sound effects under one of his promos or something.

Harry - Wow. I was trying to keep that "Vic Davis" thing under wraps. Damn, you blew it! LOL.

Great posts here. Lots of names and memories.

And what was that theme you used at WMVB when I was on WDVL?? Was it "I'm just wild about Harry"?

Speaking of WMVB - when I was there we had a jock named "Bill Bang" doing middays. Yes it WAS his real name. I didn't notice if he was mentioned in the posts.

Ed Klein was mentioned in one of the posts. Good guy. We shared about 20 years together at WPEN. He is retired now in Vegas.

Keep those memories flowin'!

Forgot this guy - my neighbor here in Fla -

Ted Hudson. This guy was a child-prodigy at WOND. I'm sure Tom McNally remembers. He was on the air at 15 or 16, and ended up at WPEN, WIFI, WSNI in Philly, then WNBC and a few other NYC stations, and eventually landed in Tampa Bay.
He's retired from radio - I'm retired from radio - yes life goes on! Who woulda' thunk??

Ed Johnson...doesn't mention doing the weather on WMGM TV40 for $ 20 a night (6 AND 11) plus a tank of gas now and then.

Uhhhh...Does anybody happen to know if that job for $20 a night plus a tank of gas now and then…has been filled yet?

Yep ... Ted started when he was 14 or 15 ... his mom taxied him back and forth from Brigantine. He has a voiceover website at http://www.tedcan.com/
I haven't seen Ted since the WIFI days.

Another child prodigy in that era made his mom sit in the parking lot waiting too ... he kept his headphones and other radio stuff in an Amway case. He's doing well for himself too. ;)

Lee Greenwood is not Lee HAZELWOOD who teamed up with Nancy Sinatra..

Remember the old Titanic joke? Goldberg...Iceberg...what's the difference? Well, replace Goldberg and Iceberg with Greenwood and Hazelwood.

Also, no more nuclear physicist jokes...There's been too much negative fallout.

Plus, two more to add to the Name Game: Joe Simone and John L. Sullivan (host of the all-night fight to daylight - and, for him, it was a fight).

Ted Cannarozzi was on WIFI when I was there Tom.. He mentored ME there, showing me the board etc.. Here's what I think happened. I quit WIFI because I was working 7 days a week at both WIFI and WPST. Ted told me that Liz and Bibgy were considering me for full time, but when I asked, I was told "not just yet". I needed the security of a full time job, and my "first" wife Andrea had a one year old at home, and another on the way.. So I had to make a choice...keep working 7 days exhausted..or keep the 5-day gig at PST and SEE my family. I chose to keep the sure thing. The station (WIFI) ended up dumping the CHR format not long after that anyway, so in the end it WAS likely a wise decision.

Tom, you may have replaced me on the roster as I believe I LEFT in September of '80. You MAY have been hired to take my place. I don't remember. I loved that little WIFI studio at Bala...everything at arms reach and it was a stand up or sit down console. I opted to stand until I feel asleep at 3am, then I sat down, only to wake up to Olivia Newton-John's "MAGIC" ending during my nap, EVEN WITH a 2 liter Coke half-downed...and then the dead air monitor went off.

WIFI-92 was always LOUDER than a Metroliner going past at 100 MPH on a platform.

Harry..do you remember if there was ever any other female voices on 11-7 Jersey Shore OTHER than NEWS people and the only jock I can think of Marsha Knicely?

Jeez..I still can't believe she's a minister...and a clerk at the West Virginia DVM.
Does she do the briss for little boys while she gives daddy his license to drive that John Deere? Oh wait..there's no Jewish folk in West Virginia.
