NASCAR broadcaster Barney Hall dies at 83

Veteran motorsports broadcaster Barney Hall died late on Tuesday night, leaving the NASCAR community without one of its most cherished and legendary storytellers. Hall was 83 years old and passed following complications from a recent medical procedure.

Hall spent more than 50 years in NASCAR, describing the action to race fans, largely in an era where events were not easily accessible on television. He was revered by participants, media and fans alike.

One error in the Auto Week article: Barney worked for the Motor Racing Network (MRN) not the Performance Racing Network (PRN). So too with the others cited in the article (David Hyatt, Joe Moore). There is a well-done audio tribute at http://www.mrn.com/Media-Center/Video.aspx?id=61af0755-2ff6-444e-9db2-644de59b94ed

I always preferred MRN (with Hall and Moore as the main announcers) broadcasts to PRN. As a kid it was always so fascinating to me how MRN would tell a story around the race circuit in 4 or 5 voices every lap with a certain authoritative style that few other broadcasts could boast.
