Nascar on the radio in Atlanta

For the third second time in three years Nascar has no home on Atlanta radio, ever since Eagle 106.7 got 86'ed Nascar has wondered in the Atlanta radio wilderness. Last year the legend picked it up,but that didn't last, besides the signal wasn't very good unless you were on the southside. It's unliekly any stations will pick it up with no spring race at AMS this year.

106.1 WNGC airs the Sprint Cup races. But can't get it on west side of ATL. Also, The Bear 92.5 in Griffin airs it, so the soutside gets it from there.

These are rimshots to ATL. So no proper station airs it. You would even think that an AM station in ATL might pick it up.

Those are all good stations,in the Monroe/Loganville area Q92.3 airs it,but if you go from one part of Atlanta to the other on race day you have to change stations. On the west side you will have to listen to South 107 in Rome.

I use to really like NASCAR. Now it is boring IMHO. I always felt NASCAR was not about racing as much it was personalities. A lot of the huge personalities who pushed NASCAR to near the top of the sports heap have retired or are not competitive. There is no (#3) to cheer or boo. NASCAR has tried to become a “national” sport with a lot of races west of the Mississippi which often means a post sunset finish and quite a few Saturday night races. There is only one AM station that covers the market after dark (750), and they do not think they can sell it. Atlanta lost one of its races which would tell any potential sponsor what little local interest there is. IIRC Charlotte (where most of the NASCAR teams are based) doesn’t even have full time radio coverage.

Try 106.7. If they are willing to stop the music for Georgia Tech football/basketball games then they will probably stop for Nascar or a Dunwoody High School game.

I don't see why WSB doesn't pick up Nascar, since they have about the same demo as UGA football...

So NASCAR races are heard on radio via 92.5 The Bear, 106.1 WNGC and South 107? That's Moby's entire local radio affiliate list, isn't it? What a coincidence. Go David Ragan!

As of this year. The blowtorch WBT carried the Daytona 500, and will likely air races based in Charlotte, but that's about it.

Moby is no longer on 92.5,they took him off at the end of the summer in '09. I haven't heard about South droping Nascar.

I wonder if Woman's World or Southern or that Rome management group or whoever really owns and/or operates 107.1 is teeing the station up for its ATL move-in (and a possible flip).

Yes, I know, it's not that spectacular of a move-in.

The "Gwinnett Is Great" water towers are gone. What is the status of the 107.5 tower move from Perimeter to Norcross, near the old water tower site? That was the contingency for the 107.1 power-up to a full 100k.

Rome Radio Group, which LMA's South 107, intends to keep things exactly as they are in terms of programming after the move. I've heard that Paul Stone, who sort of owns the station (Woman's World is his wife), has been wanting to sell it. In fact, I heard he was hoping Cox would buy it when they purchased WNGC.

As you note, the move is dependent on WAMJ moving. (WTSH already has a new pre-fab transmitter building at its transmitter site for the new equipment.) The last time I spoke with CE Vic Jester at Radio One, he seemed unsure if he would get the necessary permitting from Gwinnett County before the FCC's CP expires. Maybe Littlejohn will come on and give us an update.
