Nascar

Has anyone heard if Nascar will stay on 106.7 after this season? I know it will stay until the end of this year, but after that is unknown. When WSB lost the Braves someone sugggestest that WSB go after Nascar but they have all their money tied up in UGA.

ot sure all their money tied up in UGA would be correct. They make a lot of money at 750. The question is do they want to pay the money for the return. Nascar rights are going to be a lot cheaper than a local sorts teams rights I would have to assume.

Wouldn't NASCAR on WSB pre-empt the number one weekend show in Atlanta, Rick & Bubba? I'd hate to lose a redneck tradition for a ...redneck tradition.

They wouldn't pick up anything to be a charity. If they pick it up it will be to make money.

NASCAR (at least Winston Nextel Sprint Cup) is compatible with UGA (insert redneck joke here), except maybe during a few Sundays in February and March. Football is on Saturday and hoops is all over the week.

It might be tricky scheduling some of the additional coverage shows, but the races themselves shouldn't be a problem.

Given how boring NASCAR has become to watch I can't imagine it drawing any sizable audience on radio. Maybe it's still popular with all those junkyard watchmen.

I don't think you'll ever hear NASCAR on WSB Radio - too blue collar.

Cox owns a several stations so if there was a conflict they could move one to B98 or something. They did it all the time when they had the Braves,Hawks and UGA. Besides Nascar is the second most watchesd behind the NFL.

The NASCAR schedule does not mix well with college sports. Lots of conflicts in football season, and big race conflicts at conference and NCAA tournament time.

Cox hates to interrupt their music FM's for anything, so it only occurs when there is a conflict or if WSB-AM's transmitter fails (since WSB-AM only has UGA at the moment, there should be none).

I would suspect Kicks 101.5 will pick up NASCAR, but WGST or 94.9 could also pick it up. I highly doubt NASCAR would be on 680 or 790 due to their poor signals, and I highly doubt Q100 or Star 94 would want to add NASCAR to the top 40 mix.

It definently would not hurt WSB-AM to go after a growing demographic, and it would make Captain Herb real happy.

Would there be a possibility that NASCAR will not air in the Atlanta market? I know there is a following, but will a major radio outlet actually pick it up? We currently don't get all the content that is offered by the 2 major NASCAR networks (MRN and PRL). It was also different to hear IRL network covering the race while at the Indianapolis Raceway last week.

My sources tell me that NASCAR is indeed coming to Star 94. In fact, they will even have races starting at 8:00am. Anytime there is a wreck it'll be know as...The Morning Mess.

I'm here all week, enjoy the veal.

It ain't about you guys - its about the thousands who DO LISTEN! NASCAR is a big money maker for stations, especially in the Southeast! Who else can charge top dollar and sell out on Sunday afternoon! In the revenue column, I'll take NASCAR over anything else you can put on the air Sunday afternoon!!!!

Agreed, Carolina boy ;)

I was talking about stereotypical "southern" programming, not NASCAR.

I used to love listening to NASCAR on the radio when I was like 10 and my mom drug me along for shopping trips. Back then I think Eli Gold was anchoring most of the coverage for MRN with Barney Hall, and then a few years later when Alan Bestwick started anchoring with Barney, the coverage was still good.

Now, whenever I'm driving around running errands on Sunday and I hear PRN is doing the race, I just flip the channel to something else. The PRN people seem more interested in making each other laugh at something stupid instead of calling the race. The IMS crew had at least one of the PRN people working the Brickyard 400 and he just brought the quality down to another low.

I think the radio coverage in a major market like Atlanta though only goes to serve those people who for whatever reason can't be in front of a TV at the time and have to listen to the race. But in a lot of ways the same could be said for Braves broadcasts or any other sports broadcast. It's like anything else - if it gets people listening and advertisers buying, someone will pick it up.

I'm not a huge Nascar fan but I do enjoy hearing my friend and hometown buddy Joe Moore. We grew up and got started in radio together in Wilmington, N.C. We both worked for WGNI-1340 and WHSL-1490 at the same time. Also our Carolina friend xtalker Mike was pd at WGNI. Hi Mike! :D Joe is a good guy and we still stay in touch. Nascar will most likely always have a pressence here in Atlanta.

Nascar will be on the radio in Atlanta somewhere. I don't think Star 94 would pick it up,maybe Rock 100.5 or Kicks. The Bull and GST still has one more year on the Braves contract. I'am sure Rodney Ho will let everyone know, because of the huge following here in Atlanta.
