With only a month to go before the season starts has anyone heard who the new MRN/PRN affilate in Atlanta will be? I checked MRN's website and it still had WYAY listed as it's Atlanta affiliate.
 
The question, too, is where will it be a good fit? The obvious would be a Country station, as it was a staple for Eagle for some time. But would the Bull or Kicks take it? What about River, especially since it's sounding more AOR as of late?
 
It won't be Bull because they still have another year on the braves contract. It would proably be Kicks. there is 92.5 in griffin.

When 106.7 flipped to oldies...they could have moved it to Kicks mid-season with a little negoitation and a contract addendum agreement. It sounds like the $$$$ is too much for Kicks. Also, Kicks airing NASCAR would be a huge boost to the Bull.

Having it on the Bull or WGST would have Braves conflict. No River because of Cox policy (no sports on music stations unless it is backup).

That leaves The Fan 1 (680), The Fan 2 (1230), The Fan 3 (1340), The Zone (790), and WSB-AM (750). Another option is Rock 100.5, since there is a heavy contengent of NASCAR fans that are into rock (mostly classic rock).

My prediction is either one or two of the Fans, or WSB-AM. If Cox was willing to change policy, the River would be the best outlet for NASCAR(the station has sponsored some NASCAR related events and given away tickets to race day at AMS).

Atlanta is a key NASCAR market (right behind Charlotte and Daytona Beach), so they probably don't want to be condemned to a 1000 watt class C AM in a key market. They might have to be put on an AM, and if so I am sure they would like to be on the 50,000 watt blowtorch instead.
 
I don't see it on 680 or 790 because those other stations are hard to pick up at night. WSB would be a good fit Captin Herb has wanted 750 to get Nascar ever since 750 lost the Braves five years ago. Rock 100.5 might work it plays alot of southern rock.
 
Problem with 100.5 is exurban coverage would be horrid, due to their 10kW signal (it starts spitting in Gwinnett, as you begin to pick up interference from Whistle in Spartanburg). I think WSB would be a good fit, unless Cox is holding out for los Bravos.

This brings up the question on whether or not we will see sports/talk on a 100kW FM in ATL...
 
I've heard that there is a problem when you go up 316 towards Athens,I didn't know about the interference from the Whistle in Spartinburg. I know that is a CC owned station,Paul Koffey use to do mid days for them from Atlanta when he was on the Bull. Nascar will be on a big station in Atlanta it has to be.
 
Re: 100.5, you also get bleed from US 101 (WUSY 100.7, also owned by CC) out of Chattanooga as you go NW.
 
WUSY is where Tug the morning show producer on Kicks came from. When I'am on the south side of Atlanta sometimes the Roster 106.1 out of Columbus also owned by CC bleeds into WNGC's signal. What does CC think their stations are superior to everyone else.
 
92.5 The Bearcarries all of the Sprint Series and most of the Nationwide series. We also carry the daily NASCAR talk shows from 11p-12m each night. We have our own live in the studio NASCAR show called Southern Race Week with William Barber and Chadalac every Wed from 7p-8p. If you live on the southside and want to hear NASCAR programming there is no problem. Bubba loves his NASCAR!

To be fair, the Whistle, US 101, and the Columbus stations were all there first. 100.5 moved all the way in from Anniston with a bit of shoehorning, and WNGC (nee WLET) moved in from Toccoa, probably as close as they could without interfering with the Columbus station or 105.7, among others I'm sure.
 
Regardless of the coverage from the outside market signals, this needs a big player. I don't see it on KICKS and maybe a rocker is a better choice. Nascar would blow off all rim shots for anyone that covers Atlanta.
 
I knew 92.3 in Monroe carries Nascar, but I have the same problem with them as 92.5 I can't pick them up in my house. It maybe Kicks or Rock. As for WNGC they tried at one time to move their tower to Sugar Hill in Gwinnett.
 
Cumulus carries NASCAR on their 100kw rocker Gulf 104 in Tallahassee, so I could see it fitting in with Rock 100.5. If NASCAR wound up on Rock 100.5 that would open up the opportunity for WNGC and South 107 to carry it in the northern suburbs. With the addition of the Bear and Q92 in the southern 'burbs you'd have pretty good coverage on decent FM signals and everyone could get a cut of the advertising revenue. It's a whole lot of stations and you'd have to change the channel a lot while driving around, but it's a better option than putting NASCAR on AM unless WSB has room for it.

That's not a bad idea. You could....almost...do that without 100.5, but you'd have no decent intown coverage (except maybe from South 107 once they move to their new tower*). At that point, any major AM station (WCNN, WGST, WGKA, WQXI, maybe even WALR) would suitably handle the gap in intown coverage, even after dark.

*Hold the phones...it appears that WTSH has scrapped plans to move to a new tower and instead transmit 100K (up from 45k) from their existing tower...see http://www.recnet.com/cdbs/fmq.php?facid=&call=wtsh. Radio-Locator shows that the CP was issued Wednesday. That might get them the intown coverage by themselves.

Interestingly, this CP short-spaces WTSH with WJZZ. The CP is contingent on WJZZ's move to a new tower in Norcross, off of Buford Highway and south of JCB, which would take care of the short-space with WJZZ. WJZZ also goes up to 50k in the process.
 
Yeah, all of this would work. There will be NASCAR on FM, even if it's from a different rimshot from every direction. Cumulus isn't timid about putting NASCAR on big time country or rock FM and I'm sure NASCAR wants a real Atlanta affiliate, so I'd bet a dime on Cumulus picking it up... probably on Rock 100.5 but there's always the possibility of it winding up on Q100 if the price is right. It's just a wait and see game now. When does the season start?
