Re: Cumulus confirms WNSH 94.7 and National Brand beyond Radio

Dickey seems to be indicating they are in no hurry to have on-air personalities at 94.7. Could be jockless for quite some time.

I don't know. This is NYC. So why wait? Now 92.3 (for example) had personalities on air even before they decided who would do the morning show. So I guess he means with 'over the course of time' within a week, stepwise adding jocks on air.

Re: Cumulus confirms WNSH 94.7 and National Brand beyond Radio

I hope this dosen't happen to WOKQ in New Hampshire, they are the most long time successful station in NH and should stay local.

Re: Cumulus confirms WNSH 94.7 and National Brand beyond Radio

The music mix for the first 14 hours according to Mediabase, and as detailed in tonight's edition of Country Aircheck showed 54.3% of the tunes aired were currents & recurrents, and the other 45.7% were gold tunes.

By year, the percentages were 56% for 2010-2012 music, 37% from 2000-2009, and another 6% were from 1987-1999.

A modest 2.0 rating can make Cumulus a ton of $$$$$; WFAN has made truckloads of money for their multiple owners without ever cracking a 3.0 share to the best of my knowledge, and has been a consistent billing powerhouse since its inception.

^^^ It's not that simple, Marv.

It's WHO and WHAT that are just as valuable as HOW MANY. If I try to sell an AC station with a 2.0, it will never bill as well as a 1.0 that spikes out of control during a MLB game. Teams are huge attractions for clients. Whitney Houston spins don't.

I'd sell a 1.0 sports station long before I'd sell a 3.0-share music station.

But a 2 share in NYC is abour 2.6 million cume. That's what I'd call sellable numbers.

The key will be how they merchandise the content. It's easier in talk, but there are some interesting opportunities in NYC. It's just that they're all so damned expensive!

I often wondered if ancillary listenership accounted for the high billing of WFAN, since that would never show up in a diary or PPM.

Commercials On Nash-FM?

It's been almost two full days of nonstop country music, anyone know when the first commercial break might be? I reckon it has to be sometime this week - perhaps promoting an upcoming concert featuring the artist who had the first song on Nash-FM 94.7.

If they haven't changed the branding to "Nash", they probably will sometime very soon.

Cumulus' own country station in Nashville is branded "The Wolf." I've a feeling this "Wolf" is going to be taken out back...

Re: Cumulus confirms WNSH 94.7 and National Brand beyond Radio

The station in Nashville hasn't been called The Wolf for some time now. WSM-FM ahs been country for almost 30 years and WKDF switched to country in the mid to late 90's. My guess would be WSM will get the "Nash" brand.

Here in Poughkeepsie, WKXP/WZAD is still using "The Wolf" which is also Cumulus and it has been around for about 4 or 5 years when it was "Kicks 94.3". Danbury also has WDBY's "Kicks 105.5" and has been there for 6 years after dumping its simulcast of 106.3 to Family Radio. But I don't see Danbury and Poughkeepsie rebrands itself as "Nash-FM" anytime soon.

Re: Cumulus confirms WNSH 94.7 and National Brand beyond Radio

InsideRadio has some additional information today about bringing the Nash concept to other local stations. Apparently the amount of involvement the stations will have with it will vary. Some will not have significant changes in their programming or even their slogan. They will simply add to their ID that they are a Nash station, and possibly take some weekend and quiet hours programming. Some small stations may get a 24 hour feed.
What sounds pretty cool is that Nash will also make concerts featuring country acts, performed in Nashville and other places (New York?) available to all their affiliates, which can choose to air them.
But with this information, it seems unlikely that nearby Cumulus outlets, such as Kicks 105.5 in Danbury CT and Cat Country in Allentown PA will be much changed. My guess is they will still be live and local during weekdays, and will still have their old nicknames. It reminds me of the new CBS Sports Radio Network. Major stations such as WFAN are not much affected by it. Some are running it 24/7. And some take a portion of their shows.
The article also mentions that one reason they were able to keep the Nash concept a secret is that no staff had been hired for it. It states that hiring is now beginning.

^ The key is....FOR NOW. Like every consolidation effort on the planet, everyone is promised their jobs, and 'little will really change', etc etc... All of that is corporate spin to keep their employees in line. Everything these days is about cutting corners and saving costs. Let's see what happens in 6-12 months.

Re: Commercials On Nash-FM?

Often, a new format will have a commercial-free period after launch, typically to draw in listeners and to give the salespeople time to round up accounts. I've heard some stations that have done 10,000 in a row (roughly a month).

Re: Commercials On Nash-FM?

They don't announce a 10.000 songs in row and commercial free period-thing, so I don't think it take so long before the first commercials are on and the DJ's are on board. It's a question of days...

Re: Commercials On Nash-FM?

hot 96.9 in Boston is doing 13,000 in a row and were commercial free a week before that too.

Re: Commercials On Nash-FM?

based on press statements, management was trying to keep this seriously under raps, so I doubt they even began selling the format to advertisers
(who would be likely to be asource of chatter I suspect), so it'll probably be some time. An ad free period would certainly be a way to build listenership especially for a station which most likely noone has as a preset.

Re: Commercials On Nash-FM?

They are doing "this hour of country music brought to you by..." announcements today.
