Nashville "Music City" ??

Why has Nashville radio become so boring. The same 300 songs played on the same three country stations. The same 300 songs played on the AC station. The same 100 songs played on the classic rock station. The same 10 songs played on Top 40 stations. What is going on with Nashville radio??

We need to have more variety and keep listeners wanting to listen to Music City Radio. Do we not??

I hate to say this, but historically, the least adventurous stations get the best ratings, + vice/versa. With industry consolidation, expect it to get worse, not better. 50 years ago, there were substantial differences in radio stations with the same format from one town to another, not anymore. If I programmed a station, it would play 1,000+ songs. And nobody but me would listen-

Do what I do: burn CDs. Take them with you when you travel. Then you won't be subjected to the schlock that radio forces upon you, all because you are not in some coveted "demo." Of course, at the rate things are going, stations are going to be jammed by all these damned "translators" that are popping up like weeds these days!

Or get Sirius/XM radio. It is my understanding that "corporate" hasn't been able to kill that one yet!

I believe Hippie is about 1,500 songs and growing. You guys are about right on the 300-350 on the stations you mentioned above.I dunno, Firepoint - having had to listen to Sirius' various decades formats for hours, if not days, was the most painful listening experience of my last 50 years. Most of those playlists are extremely corporate and safe. I think the blending of decades like Hippie is at least a little break from one decades sound. Can Sirius get more of a corporate sound? Yes, I am sure of that. Will it? Not sure. They do have some stations that play deeper cuts, but even those are sprinkled in with the familiar. You are right though, none of us would probably have successful radio stations playing what we like. They'd be unique, for sure, though. It's weird though, musically speaking one listener's trash is another listener's treasure. I think it's just a reality of radio with decades of music stacked up that you just have to try to entertain the most listeners through a set, knowing they are probably going to only really like 30% of the songs...and hope no other station is getting better odds. BTW, I THINK AT 40 played properly yesterday and there were no file issues. Curiosity got me and I tuned in about 1:05 and the countdown was at like number one or two.

Okay, well in fairness, I will say that I do not have XM/Sirius (yet), so I cannot really comment on its programming. I will say that we had a trial version of it for a while there on the car that I have now, and I was impressed with it, but I have not been able to listen to it long-term. So I suppose that we are back to the "burning CDs" idea, and I have started doing that.

Glad to hear that AT40 programmed correctly yesterday. Seems like if it programs correctly, it does indeed run a little long, so I have come to expect that. For whatever reason, they do not drop the optional "extra" tracks from their program. They must run a lot of commercials during the program. Still no excuse for what happened last week. They ran a countdown with butchered songs a few months back, and they let it happen again?

Having been subscribed to XM/Sirius for over 10 years now, I will say this. The amount of presets I have and the music that lies behind those presets blows terrestrial radio away regardless of how programmed they make it. When your mood changes, hit a new preset. Amazing what I listen to when stuck in traffic and pretty nice to be commercial free!

Nock

WRLT is definitely trying with new and local artists. I realize it's not everyone's cup of java, but it's at least something different. Dave Rossi's one of the good guys.
