Nashville Shortwave station

What ever happened to that short wave station near Nashville? Was that run by Gene Scott?

It's still there. Co-owned with AM 1300 WNQM, it's out on Ashland City Hwy. just past Briley. (you can't see the shortwave antennas from the road but you can see the five AM towers if you look closely. The obvious array right at the corner is 1200 WAMB.)

It's run by a company that runs regular AM religious stations in several cities in Tennessee and adjoining states. If I read the schedule properly, Gene Scott's organization still leases all the air time on one of their four transmitters. (a shortwave station may legally transmit on more than one frequency at a time) My understanding is that Dr. Scott left behind a LOT of taped programs...

I thought it burned down a few years back. Is it funded out of the collection plate or listner donations? Can't be run on ad sales.

the only fire I know about was long ago, when the site
was WMAK only...long before the top 40 1300/WMAK days.

as for the distance between sites, the 1200 towers are about a 1.5 miles east of
the WNQM abd shortwave site

There must be quite alot of traps/filters... having 1200 and 1300 that close could be problematic..

There's been a fire there since I came to town in 1990. IIRC it took out some but not all of the SW transmitters but obviously they've rebuilt.

Both WNQM and WWCR sell airtime in 30- or 60-minute blocks, instead of the 30- or 60-second blocks sold by most stations. I'm quite confident they're making money that way; FW Robbert may not be Clear Channel but they aren't a charity either!

The 1.5 mile figure sounds right to me. There's a "WWCR Avenue" going off to the south of Route 12. (don't bother, there's a good stout gate before you get close enough to the station to see anything)

A lot is an understatement. Gene Scott taped at least one show a day for 40+ years. The University Network will probably continue long after all of us are gone.

WWCR is a "dollar a holler" station, and they'll sell to anyone who flashes enough money in their faces, just like WNQM and its sister AM stations. The biggest proof of it is Gene Scott having 24/7 programming on one of WWCR's transmitters. R.G. Stair used to have a 24/7 transmitter as well, but he no longer appears to have one. Even without him though there are still enough conspiracy freaks and so-called "prophecy experts" to fill the schedule.

They should quit the charade of claiming to be a "Christian" station. The god (little "g") of F.W. Robbert Broadcasting is green.THey're an embarassment to Christian radio. :-\

Scott Fybush once took a tour of Nashville and WNQM/WWCR is included in the picture visits.

WWCR/WNQM is owned by Fred P. Westenburger et.al of New Orleans. The whole facility burned to the ground in a spectacular blaze one late Saturday night into Sunday morning in March of 1993. The third Harris SW-100 transmitter had just been installed and was in commissioning by the factory when the place went up in flames. The lady that was on duty did not even have time to collect her purse it went so fast. It was my opinion then and now that is was because of the wood construction and the failure of the sprinkler system. There were floresent lights that would not go out when turned off, only flickering and the sound of preachers sang from the door jams there was so much RF, every thing was talking. You could see arcs everywhere, very creepy as they say. After that, it was rebuilt even including a fourth shortwave transmitter and the AM 1300 power was increased to 50,000 watts. Dr. Gene Scott (rip) still has the full-time run of one of the transmitters and is still running after his death. The place breaks with all conventional wisdom and continues operating a very successful profitable operation while most have slipped or failed. Located accross the rail-road tracks, at the end of the road now named WWCR Avenue, behind Veach Auto Salvage, next to the Cumberland River. Some say, "radio dead end", but it keeps on beating the odds.
WAMB is now on 1200 about a mile to the southeast of WWCR/WNQM. They employ filters to keep out 1300, but will have to install filters on the 1300 day antenna tuning unit when WAMB goes up to 50,000 watts later on this year. Yes, the 80db number was hard to achive and two sets of traps were employed at WAMB to clean it up. At eight percent spacing, the inductors will have to be made of 1" tubing or larger.
