Nashville TV Wrestling 1959-2005

Recently we had the end of an era when WNAB 58 aired the last episode of

NWA MAIN EVENT. For now at least consistent local nashville wrestling

will be of the air for quite some time due to the variety of different

promtions out there. I know it all started for nashville in 1959 when

Nick Gulas, the nashville promoter at the time, bought time on WSIX TV

Channel 8 (Now WKRN Channel 2). It lasted all the way up into the 70's.

And there was a short lived attempt by WTVF Channel 5 ran by wrestling

great Lou Thesz called the UWA around 1976-77. And of course taped wrestling

from Memphis which aired on Fox 17, Upn 30, and finally WB 58 here in our area

right until 1997. That is when Bert Prentice, current Nashville Promoter,

decided to join the fun with his first installment Music City Wrestling/NWA

Worldwide/NWA Nashville on UPN 30. He then started USWA which replaced the

previous show and stayed on there until last year. NWA Main Event solidered on

WB 58 until this month. That' all I've got. If I left anything out feel free

to add in. But that's a good roundup of the history of local nashville wrestling

on tv.

There was one other brief period when Nashville did not have local TV wrestling. WSIX-TV 8 cancelled wrestling sometime in 1967. It came back when Channel 17 WMCV first came on the air in 1968. It also returned to WSIX the same year.

Nick Gulas continued to promote weekly cards without television.
