What the heck happened to WHLI? Took a big dive! Could it have possible been due to the power change while installing the new tower?

Shifting to the Hampterhead book (Hamptons-Riverhead), It still amazes me how the ratings for just about all the stations are all over the chart. Without giving specific calls, stations jumping from 8.9 -> 6.7, 8.3 -> 4.8, 1.8 -> 4.8, etc. <P ID="signature">______________

Bruce Tria explained it once. Because WHLI is on longer in the Summer, the ratings work against it. The winter numbers are slightly distorted because of how they calculate it with the stations time off the air. I forget exactly how it works, perhaps Bruce can shed some light.

You can see a similar trend last summer.

While it's true that the ARB calculations hurt daytimers...kids!...WHLI was limping on one tower and 1kw for part of the book and it still came in top 10!

Agreed. Although most of the audience is probably Nassau/Western Suffolk to begin with, the tower problem is/was probably a factor... the station does well with high TSL and a loyal fanbase... one that is likely to stick around for advertiseres messages vs younger demos with lower TSL who would tune out at the drop of a hat.

WHLI's status as a daytime only station helps it because its quarter hour share is based on its actual hours of operation. In other words, full time stations have their listeners spread across the 18 hours of 6 am to Midnight, where in December, for instance, WHLI operates from 7:15 am to 4:30 pm. For most AM stations, this can lead to a distortion of the numbers since clearly, radio listening falls considerably after 6 pm (that television thing), yet its average quarter hours are determined by using the entire 18 hour block.

Thanks for your confidence. . .

Actually, it helps daytimers. And WHLI at 1,000 watts, non-directional still serves about 1,000,000 people in Nassau County. Watch them on a year to year basis. WHLI crests in the winter months (shorter hours) and slopes downward in the summer months. Now the fact is that WHLI is a very strong station with outstanding ratings but you will notice a wave action if you were to plot it on a chart.
