National Coverage of the Empire State Building shooting

Boy I'm getting left out. I was listening to WBBM newsradio in Chicago and WWJ in Detroit, also a newsradio. WBBM only barely mentioned that 13 more people were shot in Chicago in the last 24 hours.

News all over is just slipping.

As events unfolded, i noticed the big 3 networks did not break from programming to cover this, both ABC and NBC kept normal programming with concerts, while CBS signed off and sent local stations to their usual programming.

ABC News One is not a news channel. It's an affiliate news feed. At present, ABC doesn't have a widely-distributed (or promoted) news channel.

NBS has MSNBC and ABC has ABC News One and CBS no News Channel. Fox has Fox News Channel.

None of these are OTA, so they're just not very serious about news.
They are marketing entities for subscriber content systems. ;)

NBC TV WMAQ in Chicago did cut away from the NBC network "morning show" for a few minutes.

When something like this happens I'm sure there are conflicting internal opinions about stories and whether or
not they rise to the level of national attention.

Put in context, the number of shootings per "event" divided by the overall shooting rate seems to be the difference.

Sadly, 13 shot in one weekend is not news in Chicago.

True But 13 people shot in one weekend in Chicago will only have outrage within Chicago districts but not nationwide. But if its in Norway or Colorado and 13 people are shot then national outrage will come into play.
