National EAS Test Failures

I'm really glad I stayed up to listen to this particular modern version of the Three Stooges at the "micro-phoney."

Thanks for the trainwreck psycho-billy test trainwreck audio...the last few seconds sound like the biggest dang reverb tank in the whole universe.

Relay netrwork in Chicago as heard on WGN 720 only gave about 10 seconds of voice info before dead silence until the
live on-air hosts cut back in after maybe 30 sec.

TEST: FAIL

Yep... DFW LP-1 WBAP has one minute of silence (actually a low hum); No aural information broadcast.

Also, scrolled thru over the air TV and noted that some stations (13, 68, 2 for example) either dumped out of the test early or never activated. 4 - 8 - 11 were still broadcasting EAS test info, while the others mentioned had non

I'm Viewer/Listener from Connecticut:

WXCT 990 AM Southington - No test. Station is owned by Davidson Media Group and runs a Spanish Religious format piped in from an internet stream from a studio in New Jersey.

After the test FOX 61 WTIC-TV owned by Tribune d/b/a CT1 Media was running the audio of CBS's 96.5 TIC-FM for nearly 10 mins.

After the test both News 8 ABC WTNH and MY TV 59 (both owned by LIN-TV) ran the audio of regular programming while continuing to have a slide on the screen with their logo on it and the words National EAS Test.

In Corpus Christi, TX same thing...tone then 30 seconds of background static noise (no actual audio message) and 16 FM/AM stations did not relay the test. I'll post in Texas forum section the list.

Re: TEST: FAIL (OREGON)

Let's see all of Oregon and anybody that relays the test from OPB (Oregon Public Broadcasting) failed....NO TEST...NADA....can we say BOX FAILURE....really....entire State ...CMON.....

No Test here in Dallas neither

No test in Tallahassee, FL...it just didn't air on the LP1 or LP2. They're blaming it on a "board op error"...

Was the originating station a Marconi Spark Gap transmitter? We got everything, but the audio was terrible. Very very noisey and almost imposible to understand.

I hope they don't attempt to give the FCC that story. The Board Op shouldn't be in the picture. It should have been an automatic override of the station audio.
It was a failure on a monumental scale.

Re: TEST: FAIL

Get a horse!

Re: TEST: FAIL

Bring back the old Civil Defense sirens from the 1940s.
At least the old sirens were able to alert a few people that 'something' was happening.

Re: TEST: FAIL

All of my stations received something...........buzz, hum, silence, static, and others had horrible audio with cutouts and digital skipping. FAIL

Also no audio between Header and EOM in Bryan / College Station, received from Texas State Networks by LP1 KJXJ-FM in Bryan. Only a lot of channel noise sucked up by concatenated (and not very well gated) AGCs. I confirmed with TSN that no audio was received by TSN from Primary Entry Point WBAP-AM in Fort Worth. Also noted that the time stamp from TSN's ENDEC was 1303 on the message that was received by KJXJ-FM at 13:00:17.

Take care,

I was surprised by what the news guy on WBAP Dallas said immediately after the failed test... something to the effect of we are not sure if the test was correct, referring to the lack of audio.

FCC Bulletin on this test said:

The test will include transmission by the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) of a “live” Emergency Action Notification (EAN) code to all EAS Participants and
notice to the general public that the EAS has been activated for a national emergency, along with an
audible notice that “this is a test.”

perhaps LP-1 station staff might read the FCC bulletin before the test as to know exactly what to expect?

the complete bulletin is found here.

Update on Tallahassee...word now is that the NPR affiliate lost it's authorization for it's Sat Receiver that was providing the test (they call it "squawk box"). Wow.

Why can't every station just have a Ku band box to get the national level tests? Or even the states for that matter. Use the daisy chain of stations as a back up in case Iran or North Korea knocks the bird out of the sky. If I can get TV on a little 18" dish, why not do the same thing for EAS for ALL stations?!

Dumb. The whole thing is really dumb. It would be state of the art in 1955, but not now.

This daisy chain is only as good as the weakest link.
Why not use the WWV system to send the information to the local stations?
