National EBS Waste

Bravo! Did anyone catch the textbook "Cumulus-style" federal government fiasco of the Emergency Test attempt today? When we all thought only Crumy could screw up radio this much, leave it to the only source of worse business sense to botch this? We used to fly men to the moon. We used to have good sounding radio. Now we have Lady Ga-Ga as our Natl. Emergency BS spokesman?

We should feel safe about the reality that when the actual emergency does happen, we will not have a clue that it happened. Talk about being caught in a bad romance....

P.S. Did a certain station in Nashville run this "test" three or more times?

the test ran fine for me...listened to it on JackFM and The River.. both went off without a hitch... If other stations had issues...that could be issues in programming their equipment

I was on 106.7 and didn't hear it. Actually, it was Lady Gaga on, so I'm assuming that's what you're referring to.

(Speaking of 106.7, they almost sound like they're creeping to "Blazin' 1067")

I watched it on channel 4. Relatively uneventful. Certainly no War of the Worlds or anything like that, although I believe they interrupted a law firm commercial to put it on. See, it wasn't ALL bad! ;D Seemed to me that they left the EAS graphic on the screen longer than they needed to, after it was over, although they went right into Better Nashville uninterrupted.

From what I'm hearing, Nashville may be the only market to pass the test....

There was another feed mixed with what we were relaying. Sounded like printthru on an analog tape, about 25-30dB down. I thought I was hearing things but when I played back the aircheck it was for real. Nowhere near loud enough to make the audio difficult to understand.

I don't know why the graphic stayed up so long, I might guess the guys who programmed the automation gave the test an extra 30 seconds to allow for something going wrong in Washington. (IMHO a good idea!)

Being an EAN, we're required to relay it *immediately*. (unlike an "ordinary" test, where one can "hold" it for a few minutes before relaying) So if Washington hit the switch during a commercial, that commercial was going to get interrupted.

So how could this be so hard? I'm not kidding please tell us how it could get messed up? What am I missing?

there is still some level of human intervention involved with this.. Seems the results have been mixed, some areas it worked nearly perfectly, others, not so much. There will need to be a review done of what happened, and what can be done to fix it. Because of the numerous bad reports, I feel we'll see another nationwide test in another 3-6 months.

Im trying to figure out why WSM-AM is still point of entry for the entire Middle Tennessee area. Made sense in the 60s when EBS was around, and the band was less crowded...but today...AM=noise, even relatively close to it's transmitter in Nashville. Seems like a better option would be NOAA Weather Radio since most areas in the US are within ear shot of a transmitter. Just my two cents worth.

There were audio issues at my station (WKDZ-FM) just north of Clarksville, TN where we heard the tone three times within the message. Sounded like a horrible echo in a music hall. Our POE station is WHOP in Hopkinsville. Otherwise it went off without a hitch here.

My question is was 92.9 playing "Escape" at the time? ::)

I seem to recall that the first news reports of "shots fired in Dallas" in 1963 also interrupted a commercial. But I wouldn't know that firsthand, as I wasn't born until the following week, but I have seen archival footage of it many times since then.

As for yesterday, I'm not worried about Hughes and Coleman. I'm sure that channel 4 gave them a makegood for their interrupted spot.

I seem to recall seeing the initial reports interrupt a commercial, but I believe they briefly returned to normal programming before pre-empting for good for the next four days.

I saw an interview with Walter Cronkite, and he said they "had to warm up the camera tubes back then", so there was about a 15 minute delay in getting on camera. After that he said CBS always had a camera "warmed up" and ready to go on the air since then. I am sure the new cameras are solid state and do not require a 15 minute warm up.

I'd seen the short clips of Cronkite interrupting the soap, back on the soap, more audio then video that we've all seen every year the anniversary comes around. I saw the real time video and didn't realize how long audio-only coverage continued, well past 2pm.
