National Media Drops Ball (Again)

Story about Tucson police officer shooting "man in wheelchair" airing on NBC Nightly News left out very important facts (as usual).

Backstory: Man in wheelchair went into store and shoplifted a toolbox. Off-duty policeman tracked him while he wheeled his way across parking lot intending to enter second store. Policeman tried talking him into stopping at which point wheelchair man pulled knife on officer and continued entering store. Policeman shot wheelchair man fatally. Officer now being fired for "unreasonable force".

I am not arguing that officer did not use appropriate judgement (he could have called for backup) but here is who he was dealing with. It made print media but not NBC broadcast. NBC did make their last story about Christmas lights. Nice!

What was not said: Wheelchair man has long crime record including assault and two instances of shooting at police. Here is his official rap sheet:
 
None of the Almighty East-based media could find Arizona on a map, and they care even less. The Nooyawk Broadcasting Company is the worst of the bunch.

Or Washington D.C. most of the news divisions of networks are split in two places New York and DC.

*Note ABC is technically a West Coast based network in Burbank and Glendale due to where the CEO and board seat are located for Disney Inc. But Disney's main offices for ABC news division is located in New York.

However, Tegna, EW Scripps, Gray Media inc, Allen Media, and Fox Inc which does have Newsrooms in Arizona are most likely to include details from the incident in question.

Irrelevant. Having a criminal record does not justify the police shooting. Even if he was actively wanted for a heinous crime, that still wouldn't -- in our system of government, a prosecutor, judge, and jury is what imposes the death penalty, not a police officer.

U.S. police officers are going to need better training on how to handle having a knife pulled on them. In every other country on Earth, they don't go kablammo! every time they see a knife or box cutter.

No, in many just thinking that the suspect is carrying will result in instant weapon discharge.
