NBA Confirms Massive Turner, Disney Deals

http://espnmediazone.com/us/press-releases/2014/10/165140/

In the ESPN press release above, there's also another plan in place in which the NBA could launch a streaming service using ESPN's digital platforms, which would include a handful of games each season, plus some other ancililary programming.

I mean, from the looks of things, ESPN/ABC got a pretty good deal for what they paid for (TV, radio, online digital rights), as opposed to Turner, who basically paid double for the broadcast rights they already have.

Soooooo...how much higher will your cable bill be now? I am so glad I don't get ESPN or the other sports channels!

ESPN, by itself, is the most expensive basic cable network around...at last checked, ESPN costs $6 per month, per subscriber; TNT is the next most expensive, but at $1.48. Remember too that Turner had begun (or at least is still in the process of) laying-off about 500 employees just so they can have the money to re-up with the NBA.

I'm kind of surprised at the money being spent on NBA rights, given that regular season games (except for the Christmas games and anticipated marquee matchups) put up ratings more like MLB than NFL. But the NBA probably reaches a younger audience on average than any of the other "big four" team sports on US TV. (Soccer's may be even younger, but the numbers are generally too small to matter.)

What a shame that Fox didn't get the NBA for Fox Sports 1, I would suspect that by the time 2025 rolls around they're going to have the NHL (either a pice of the package or a Rogers-type deal where Fox/FS1 sublicense the games to the NHL Network) as of right now I'm leaning towards Fox pulling a Rogers Media-type move because I believe Fox is disappointed that they didn't get the NBA and I belei they're going to show it to espn but getting most if not all of the big ten games (they're going to use their stake in the Big Ten Network as a leverage for that) and I wouldn't be surprised if they wound up with the NHL by 2021 my bold predictions are as follows:

Fox pretty much shuts out espn of the package for Big Ten games by using their stake in the Big Ten Network as a leverage.

Also Fox is going to grab NHL rights and pull a Rogers Media-type move and sublicense the games to The NHL Network tagain they're going to use their RSNs that shows NHL games as a leverage.

I'm telling you, Fox is very disappointed that espn (which FS1 is trying to go after) shut them out of the NBA package and they're going to pay them the price for both the Big Ten and NHL TV rights in 2016 and 2021 respectively.
