NBA on TNT Overrun

Does anyone know why TNT didn't switch over the Miami Heat vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers to the 2nd game (Phoenix Suns vs. Golden State Warriors) in the SF Bay Area? The Warriors are the local team yet TNT decided to stay with the 1st game, yet that game was a total blowout. TNT even had the nerve to go to a long commercial break after the 1st game so as of right now, the Warriors game isn't on TV yet. Why doesn't TNT at least put the 2nd game on TBS temporarily until the conclusion of the 1st game? So for Warriors fans like me, we've missed 7 minutes of the game but finally now they switch it over... go figure.

Maybe they don't want to anger anyone watching TBS's regular programming, or have Suns-Warriors fans switch to TBS, only to switch back to TNT?

Probably because it's Thursday, it's the first month or so of the season ["meaningless"], because you're one of a few Warrior fans outside of Patty Smyth's fan club, and because "Lebron returns to Cleveland" has been 2/3* of the traffic on the internet and sports talk radio today?

*traffic number is estimate only

I would think though that in the local markets (SF Bay Area and Phoenix) they would want to switch at the start of the 2nd game so as not to anger the local fans of those two teams. I've seen in previous instances where the 1st TNT game goes into overtime (or 2) and the 2nd game is joined in very late (halfway into the 2nd quarter of the 2nd game).

I'd think they'd rather milk the Lebron-vs.-Cleveland-that-appeals-to-the-national-audience angle for ten more minutes than appease the throngs of Warriors and Suns fans in those two cities, but that's probably just me.

Maybe they still had some spot breaks to run that were sold because of the Lebron vs. Cleveland angle and didn't want to have to do make-goods? Somewhere, there is a logical explanation, even if it's a painful one.

Well, you have to remember, TNT isn't like CBS/ABC/NBC where they can change what local areas see. Whatever comes out of their HQ in Atlanta, everyone sees nationwide, unlike CBS/ABC/NBC affiliates where one market gets one game, and another market gets another.

Well, if it was during the 11PM hour, they probably didn't want to disturbed their main demographic show, Conan, as that's the moneymaker for TBS right now, when it comes to ratings. As a huge Conan fan, I would of been mad if they cut out, or didn't show Conan to show a basketball game.

I don't see where this is any different than any other network carrying a sports doubleheader where they will join the second game in progress if the first game runs over, or possibly switch between the two games if they overlap according to where the most action is happening at the time until the first game is over.

The reason you ask? LeBron, LeBron, LeBron, and...LeBron..and imagine the frustration if TNT cut away and some fan snapped, hit the court and smacked him one.

ah...The NBA..you score, I score, you score, I score, everybody takes four steps......yawn....

My question was regarding why TNT couldn't switch from the 1st game (Heat/Cavs) to the 2nd game (Suns/Warriors) for the residents of the Phoenix/SF Bay Area only. I could understand the rest of the nation staying with the 1st game to the conclusion, but in the Phoenix/SF Bay Area, the local teams had tipped off already and I didn't know if TNT could've switched from the 1st game to the 2nd game for the SF Bay Area and the Phoenix area only, while leaving the rest of the nation to finish up the 1st game.

But as another poster had said in a prevous post, maybe TNT can't split feeds for certain areas, so the one feed they have, they either have to show the 1st game or the 2nd game to the whole nation and that seems to be the most plausible explanation.

They dont' have multiple feeds going on at one time. So...radio?

How can SF and/or PH fans watch the game if its playing in their hometown? Whenever the Spurs play here at home and the game is carried on TNT, Fox Sports SW or ESPN, it is blacked out. Since their pre-playoff games are never sold out, we never get to see a home game on TV, unless you fork out $50+ extortion to Time Warner for pay per view, go to a bar where they paid for the game or spend $100+ and go to the game.

Despite me actually watching the NBA, that is just funny. ;D

It's technically impossible for a cable network to do this.

But then how does the whole "reverse mirror" thing work with college football on the various ESPN networks and ABC? Generally speaking, high-profile games are seen on the ABC affiliate in the home markets of the two teams playing while ESPN in those markets shows a lower-profile game. Yet, the rest of the country gets that high-profile game on ESPN.

So doesn't this mean that it is possible for a cable network to feed different programming into different markets?

They can't.

For the Suns (and I assume other teams), there are a handful of TNT games for which either Fox Sports AZ or KUTP-TV 45 also have (their own) coverage. Both telecasts are shown without blackouts. But the majority of TNT games are exclusive to TNT. I assume that last night was one of those games, in both Phoenix and SF.

I'm shocked to hear that the Spurs pre-playoff games are never sold out. I was always the under the impression that the fans there were more loyal than in many other (larger) markets.

From 1993 to 1998, many Suns home games were available only on Pay Per View in the Phoenix market. It didn't matter if the game was sold out (and they pretty much all were for all or most of that period). If TNT was also carrying the game, it was blacked out on TNT. This applied to both regular season and the playoffs. Any NBC games were exclusive to NBC and never blacked out.

I'll never forget the moment when Suns Pay Per View was laid to rest. It came literally an hour or so before the start of Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Playoffs (one of the many Suns/Spurs playoff series over the years - and yes one of the many that the Suns lost.) I remember hearing the announcement while listening to the Suns' pre-game show on KTAR 620 AM.

For several years after Pay Per View ended, I believe that Suns home games carried on Cox Cable Channel 9 (and possibly later Cox Channel 7) were blacked out on TNT if they had coverage. I'm pretty sure this practice ended during or around the 2002-03 season.

These days, all Suns games are carried on TV (across Fox Sports AZ, TNT, ESPN, KUTP, and ABC), and none are blacked out.
