NBC’s ‘Peacock’ To Join Streaming Fray In April

https://tvnewscheck.com/article/top-news/239109/nbcs-peacock-to-join-streaming-fray-in-april/

NEW YORK (AP) — Comcast’s NBCUniversal said Tuesday that its upcoming streaming service will be called Peacock, in an homage to NBC’s logo. It will become the home for some of the company’s most popular shows, including “Parks and Recreation” and “The Office.”

That means both will be leaving Netflix, although not for several months after Peacock launches. As Disney, AT&T’s WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal prepare to debut their streaming services, they have been taking some of their TV and movie deals away from Netflix, the most popular streaming service.

That augurs a future where consumers will have to hunt for their favorite shows and films among lots of different services. WarnerMedia for example on Tuesday also announced that HBO Max, its upcoming streaming service, will have the U.S. rights to “The Big Bang Theory.” Netflix on Monday said it’s adding Seinfeld.

Comcast has announced that NBC will have a streaming outlet called Peacock.

Last time they used “Peacock” as a word, slogan, etc., they were “Proud as a Peacock”

Arguably their worst years...

The streaming bubble will happen. NBC might fare better if they include it free with Xfinity. Don’t worry, however: cable will welcome back the cord-cutters with an overpriced “Triple Play” package.

Here is More

Comcast/NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service, Peacock, will have a version that can be accessed for free by all consumers.

Peacock will be ad-supported, and the free tier will have more than 7,500 hours of content. Matt Strauss, chairman of Peacock and NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises, said that the service will limit its ad loads to five minutes of commercials per hour.

NBCU will also sell Peacock Premium for $4.99 per month. The service will have more than 15,000 hours of content including original series. Strauss said that there will be an ad-free version of Peacock Premium available for $9.99 per month.

It's also going to be available to Comcast customers first, with everybody else a month or so later. No word on how it affects those of us in a market with an NBC O&O affiliate. Here in Hartford/New Haven, they own WVIT-TV channel 30 of New Britain.

Now Today is in talks on a streaming outlet NBC is on.

NBC News is considering whether its venerable “Today” morning show might also serve as an all-day streaming-video outlet.

In a memo issued Monday, NBC News Digital staffers were told that the company plans to explore streaming opportunities for “Today” and intends to shift some employees assigned to video “to focus on preparing for a streaming experience.” A person familiar with the matter says NBC News is mulling such an initiative, but cautioned that it is in its earliest days and is not guaranteed to come to fruition.

NBC News declined to elaborate on the memo, which was sent by Ashley Parrish, vice president of strategic content and Today Digital.

Such an effort could, if fully realized, amount to a vast expansion of the relationship “Today” has with its audience. The program, which launched in 1952, has long served as a cultural touchstone to many American A.M. viewers, but a robust digital concept would turn the morning staple into a venue that could be viewed at moments of any user’s choosing. NBC has worked for several years to expand the program’s media presence, adding lifestyle stories, video clips and an e-commerce element to its content.

Here is an update on Peacock for Comcast customers

NBCUniversal makes its streaming debut with the early preview of Peacock that will be exclusive to Comcast subscribers starting Wednesday, ahead of the July nationwide rollout. But with so many people forced to stay at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, Peacock executives suggested the service could come early.

“Some have asked if there’s an opportunity to launch Peacock nationally even sooner. And that is something we’re evaluating. We certainly see the value,” Matt Strauss, chairman of Peacock and NBCU Digital Enterprises, said on Tuesday during a conference call with the media. But he cautioned that they’ll most likely stick with the planned July 15 date.

Seth Macfarlane will do segments for Peacock.

NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock, is hatching a new short-form series called “The At-Home Variety Show.”

Beginning Monday, May 11, at 7 p.m. ET, the series will stream every weekday for four weeks. “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane will introduce each segment, which will generally be under 10 minutes and will feature performances from NBCU stars including Jane Lynch, Soleil Moon-Frye, Fred Armisen, Kevin Hart and more.

Peacock will donate funds to the Feeding America, Americares and United Way charities, which are helping those affected by the coronavirus pandemic, including essential workers. Viewers will be encouraged to donate to the charities via Peacock’s website.
