I read somewhere that NBC 10's master control is in New York. How does this work? Why did WCAU do this?
 
NBC has regionalizied it's Master Control operations for many O&O's.

Besides WCAU-10 and network flagshipo WNBC-4, the master control facilities of WVIT-30 New Britain/Hartford and WJAR-10 Providence is also at 30 Rock.

And the master control facilities for all three of NBC's O&O's in California (KNBC-4 Los Angeles, KNSD-39 San Diego and KNTV-11 San Jose/San Francisco) are located at NBC's West Coast broadcast center in Burbank.
 
Other companies have done the same thing. LIN Television and The New York Times have "hubbed" their master control operations. For example, master control for WNEP (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton) is operated out of WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. Master control for LIN Television stations WPRI, WNAC, WTNH, WCTX, and WWLP are all done out of WWLP's facility in Chicopee, MA. I believe a few other LIN stations have their master control out of WISH in Indianapolis, including their duopoly in Buffalo, NY.
 
Technical Question

Just wondering how this is done.
I am assuming they have dedicated fibre lines and some sort of local back up just in case something goes wrong at the remote site.<P ID="signature">______________
