NBC-5 HYPING FINFROCKS "PROBLEM"???

This has to be an all time low in local television. I just saw a promo on NBC 5 showing video of Finfrock doing the weather and pausing to cough...The voiceover says viewers have been calling and writing "what's wrong with him?" and Thursday at 10pm they will tell us.

Whatever the issue is I think we all wish David well. As for NBC 5: YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!

Using a member of your staffs medical condition (whatever it is) as a promotional vehicle for your news programming is beyond unacceptable.

Typical KXAS -- although stations have been following their employee's health conditions for years. I remember the commercials when Harold Taft was seriously ill with cancer. He basically anointed David, Scott, and Rebecca as his successors and said that he "handpicked them to do the weather".

I saw that last night and was shocked. However, I know that has been a big question on viewer's minds. It's something different and does make you want to watch. It could also help other viewers who might be suffering from the same problem.

+ 1 -- I know I will be watching. I wish David well, although I don't watch him that often.

This is a new low for them....

DF has had occasional tickle-coughing fits many times over the years, this is nothing really new. I figured he just hadn't swigged enough water/favorite-beverage before air time.

Maybe there is some condition he's finding out about now that he didn't know for sure beforehand, but this move by the station would be about as classy as asking Newy why he doesn't lose weight or one of the women there why they don't get a facelift.

I guess it's good that I'm asleep during the news (before I get up to go to work)....

They will mostl likely discuss how cold it is this winter, and how many people have turned their thermostats up thus drying out the air. This leads to a dry throat, and coughing, especially if you are in broadcasting.

That being said,I agree with Steve. KXAS has stopped doing any type of news worthy Journalism shortly after Harold's death. They have reached a new low and ran out of ideas in focusing on Finfrock's health. Who remembers their "JAM" promo or when "Desert storm" was starting they had an American Flag and Texas flag as part of their backdrop and a segment called "War Watch"? That lasted a month. They go for the tabloid dramatics, rather than plain simple fact in reporting. Regretably Ch.8 is moving in that direction, if not already there.

The difference with Taft's condition was that they didn't hype the announcement of what he had and wait to tell the viewers until the first day of sweeps. (Thursday is the first day of sweeps)

With Taft's situation, they just explained what was going on and did some reports as it continued. It was fairly tasteful as I recall.

For those of us fortunate enough to miss all this excitement, what's wrong with David?

your suppose to tune in at 10PM Thursday evening to find out

This is just low...showboating theatrics for sweeps....

Does anyone else dislike Channel 5 as much as I do.
I just can't stand anyone on that channel. Mike Snyder is a joke. He reminds me of that guy portrayed by Will Ferrell on that movie, Ron Burgundy.

I don't get KXAS where I am. That's why I'm asking.

OK, we will watch for you and tell you what they tell us on Thursday evening. They have been running promo's telling us to watch and find out what is wrong with David. So far we don't know. Hopefully he just has a cold.

It's been going on for some time now. Often, his voice gets weak and it sounds like his breathing is shallow -- sort of like some with a type of asthma or some other similar lung condition.

I hope he's going to be OK; he's about the only reason to watch a KXAS newscast. Maybe its an allergy to the pollution KXAS puts on before his segment -- everytime I dare turn them on, the story is a new "crime altert," "health alert," or Brian Curtis "reporting" on a new business with great prices. Speaking of those, are those infomercials pretending to be news stories sponsored? At least, the "segments" on WFAA's "Good Morning Texas" that are paid for are noted at the end of that show.

I remember the "War Watch" controversy. Of course, at the end of the day, KXAS was absolutely right on "War Watch" -- although they caved in after a few DAYS (not a month) and changed it to "Gulf Watch". The flag waving continued.

Forgive me in advance if I offend your sensibilities about Harold Taft. In light of the "anointing" commercials, we were joking at work that they were going to run commercials with Harold's voiceover along the lines of "Now that I'm gone, I just want my audience to know that I have left this weather department in capable hands -- David Finfrock, Scott Chesner, and Rebecca Miller (the only woman I have ever hired)." At the time, we were ROTL -- we just loved Harold Taft!! ;D ;D

KRIV/Houston did this the last sweeps period, when the 9pm anchor/med. reporter had an issue. They played it up during numerous teases and promos. It turned out to be a treatable, non-cancerous issue. They played it up as "It could happen to you, too. That's why we're telling you this." I agree, it is in poor taste to hype up someone's illness like this. I don't believe WFAA played up Chip Moody's medical situation, nor did KTRK here in Houston, when 5,6,10 anchor Shara Fryer was diagnosed with cancer. Shame on KXAS.

Actually, WFAA did a sweeps series on Moody's fight with cancer. The graphic was a silhouette of Moody leaning against a wall with his head down. Thought it was tacky then, think the Finfrock thing is tacky now.

He is allergic to Mountain Cedar and he is being treated for it. Not really much to the story once they got done.
